Keeping Active in Autumn

The cool breezes of the fall are here, making mornings a little crisper and nights better suited for snuggling. It’s time to adjust activities to find the right balance between hanging onto the heat and accepting autumn.

Hot Yoga
Although it’s no longer summer, it always feels like summer in a hot yoga studio, so be sure to attend this class with the bare minimum, as far as clothing goes (sports bra and shorts). If you’re new to the class, try a beginners course to ensure that you don’t over exhaust your body.

(For more on hot yoga see An Insider's Guide to Hot Yoga.)

Pole Fitness
This is a fun class to try with a group of friends. Whether it’s for fun or to be more flirty with your guy, this activity will create tons of laughter and memories. Grab a pair of cute pumps out of the closet and get going.

Horseback Riding
With the leaves changing colors, and the frost that settles on them, hopping on a horse may be all it takes to feel like you’re living in a fairytale. Instead of going to a local Go-Cart track, slow things down riding horseback.

Paint Balling
If you’re looking for some action-packed fun, get the girls together and take a cue from guys day out, and go paint balling. Dressing in layers for this activity fits perfectly with the cooler air, and you’ll get a good workout.

Whatever you decide to do, don’t let the return of fall keep you in a state of hibernation until next summer. Stay active by trying out some new activities. Also, remember to check out Groupon for local deals on all of these activities.

An Insider's Guide to Hot Yoga

I’m more of a contact-sport kind of girl, but when a friend informed me that there was free hot yoga in town I was intrigued. Hot yoga, unlike regular yoga, is performed in temperatures up to 105 degrees Fahrenheit. Yoga studios often offer both regular yoga and hot yoga. The sauna-esque heat allows your muscles to stretch further sans pain throughout the duration of class.

I partook in two hot yoga classes and can honestly report that hot yoga is an excellent workout. But before attending a hot yoga class, let me fill you in with some details.

Class Length
Classes can run from 45 to 90 minutes. For your first class, always pick the shortest duration. Even if you run marathons for fun or bench 280 plus pounds, hot yoga is a completely different workout. Allow yourself time to adjust to hot yoga before continuing onto a longer class.

Hydration
Drink water before, during and after class. It is 105 degrees in the room, and you are practically swimming in your own sweat (attractive, I know). Due to the heat, you are losing liquids faster than Kim Kardashian’s marriage dissolved. If you feel dizzy, do not feel ashamed to lie down in Savasana (Dead Corpse Pose) and guzzle down water. In fact all instructors encourage their students to listen to their bodies over pushing themselves. I made the mistake of not hydrating before my 90 minute class and, consequently, sat out for most of the session.

I suggest bringing two 16-ounce water bottles (the standard size) to class. Before class, drink enough water that when you pee your urine is mostly clear. It is a crude test, and may sound excessive, but nothing is worse than fainting from dehydration.

It is Not a Competition
A wide variety of people do yoga: super fit yogi masters, me, beginners, you name it. At first, you will not be able to complete every pose with poise. Your legs will shake, you will sweat, but no one will care. Yoga is personal; you are not competing against your neighbor.

What to Eat to Support your Workout

In society, women are constantly being judged for what they wear, how they look and what they eat. As women, we try to do everything we can to make sure that we look our best, from working out to buying the right clothes. But exercising does not help you if you do not eat the right foods, too.

Most people should not eat a large meal before they exercise. If you do, you will most likely feel uneasy during your workout and want to quit. Eating a small meal or snack before exercising will help keep blood sugars at the right levels to make sure that you make it through your workout.

Good options before an exercise are bananas, a whole grain bagel with peanut butter and/or yogurt. Eating a small snack before you exercise is especially important if you have not had a meal within the past two hours.

Just as important as eating before exercise is stating hydrated. It is necessary for you to not only drink during your workout but also before. It has been said that you should drink at least three cups of water within the two hours before you workout. Stay hydrated by continuing to drink throughout your workout.

After you workout, your body will have worn itself out a bit. It is important to eat something small immediately after you exercise to help your body recover. An apple or other piece of fruit, string cheese, yogurt, peanut butter sandwich and/or nuts are great examples of food to eat after you exercise.

It is important to treat your body properly. That does not mean to over exercise yourself to fit into a specific size. It means exercising to keep your body in good shape but also eating to fuel that body. Eating properly and exercising will help make your body feel good.

6 Natural Ways to Help Start the Day Energized

The golden rule of sound sleep is having an average of eight hours; however, late nights spent juggling academic and social life can make waking up in the morning quite difficult. Many may have a caffeine kryptonite. Caffeine, like any drug, can be an unhealthy addiction. It can cut into sleep by causing insomnia, given that it usually takes 24 hours to exit the system. So cut coffee and soda out of your day and make waking up early less dreadful with these habits that will have the body up and going in no time.

1. Snoozing Means LosingAvoid hitting the snooze button all together. To refrain from doing so, place all wake-up call devices across the room. This forces night owls to physically get out of the bed. And after making it that far, it’s less likely to choose to go back sleep. Also, be sure that the alarm tone is loud enough to hear across the room and annoying enough that you’ll be dying to turn it off.

2. Let’s Get Physical Don’t put off daily workouts until the evening. Instead, set the alarm a bit earlier and go for a quick run. Exercising releases endorphins, providing more energy. Not to mention, working out early can help you sleep more soundly.

3. Lighting is Crucial The faintest beams of light in the bedroom, from cell phones to laptops, can prevent anyone from a good night’s sleep. But be sure to open up the blinds in the morning, and the natural light will help wake up a foggy brain. But if there is no source of sunlight, turning on a light will do.

4. Get “Berried” AwayRaspberries and strawberries are good sources of energy. But there are many other fruits that can be substituted for energy sources; there’s something that caters to each personal appetite if these don’t work. If there’s not enough time to stop and eat in the mornings, try preparing fruit smoothies the night before. Avoid foods that are filled with carbs, sugar and fats because these foods will leave the body feeling sluggish.

5. Heaven ScentDifferent scents like jasmine, citrus and peppermint provide quick energy boosts. Try a “peppermint steam,” by placing a few drops of peppermint at the bottom of the shower -- the steam will wake up the senses. Or shampoo with peppermint will do the trick.

6. Water WorksStart the morning with two, eight-ounce glasses of water. While this seems insignificant, it will rehydrate the body, helping to clear a foggy mind because all thinking processes need water to work. Not everyone enjoys water, but a squeeze of lemon may be added for taste.

Bad habits are always tough to kick. But with these tips, as well as some time and patience, there’s no longer a need to choose caffeinated beverages to avoid being cranky.

How to Get a Beach Bod for Spring Break

Spring break is one of the most anticipated breaks for college students. However, the preparations for sculpting a perfect beach body after holiday feasting aren’t as popular. There’s no need to join a gym, or even go to one for that matter, with these exercises that can be done from the comfort of home.

Squats: For basic squats, spread both legs shoulder length apart and squat down to a 90 degree angle; come back up and repeat. Also, be sure to keep the back straight, as if the body was positioned against a wall. Take this exercise up a notch by holding a 10-pound weight parallel from the chest cavity or do squat-jacks. Squat-jacks begin as a normal squat, but then bring legs together and do a closed-leg squat. That’s one rep. Aim for 20.

Planks: Lying on the abdomen, lift the body onto toes and elbows, positioning feet shoulder length apart. Stay in this position for a minute. For advanced plankers, try the plank-style pushups. Simply stay in plank position, and lift off each elbow one at a time. Drop back down to each elbow; that makes one rep.

High Knees: Stand up straight and lift the starting leg to waist level at a 90 degree angle, alternate legs at a quick pace (maintaining comfort). This can be done for two reps of 30 seconds or longer.

Mountain Climbers: For mountain climbers, lie on the floor, position the body into a plank, bring one leg up (high knees style) and alternate legs at a quick pace for two reps of 30 seconds.

Wall Sits: This is a simple exercise, and it can be done while studying over note cards. Studies have proven that working out can improve memory; so you have nothing to lose. To get started, lean back on a wall and squat (position legs at a 90 degree angle). Hold this pose for one minute. If a whole minute is too much, break the time into 30 second increments.

Butt Trilogy: These three exercises are specifically for toning the butt area. Do them in a sequence for best results. For each of the exercises, the position will be “all fours.” Attempt to do at least 20 reps for each leg.

Donkey Kicks: Take the right leg and lift, as if reaching for the back of the head, then switch legs. Without a break, go on to Fire Hydrants. Take each leg, one at a time, and lift out to the side at a 90 degree angle. Finish up the trilogy with side whip kicks (whipping the leg at a quick, steady pace). Start with the right leg and whip-kick it to the side (alternate to the left leg). Be sure begin with the same leg each time.

Level-up Crunches: Begin with both feet positioned on the ground in a 90 degree angle, and place both hands behind the head. Begin the reps. Lift both legs into the air in 90 degree angle and do another rep. Once the second rep is complete, lift both legs straight into the air and do another rep. Repeat these steps going in the opposite direction.

Six Inches: Lie on the floor, placing both hands behind the head (sit-up position), and lift both feet 6 inches off the ground and slightly lift the head. The nose should be aligned with the tips of the big toes.

Here are some tips to remember when toning:
  • Aim for at least 20 reps on each exercise or hold positions for a minute.
  • Turn up the tunes. Working out with music makes it seem like less of a chore. Not to mention it will help block out that bittersweet burning sensation! Studies show that music can help reduce the feeling of fatigue; with an upbeat workout, throw together an equally upbeat playlist -- this will help keep the workout in sync with the tempo of the music. Likewise for a more mellow workout, such as yoga.
  • Stretch before beginning any workout. This is a common rule of thumb for any workout. It will warm up the body and reduce risk of injury.
  • College Gloss understands that exercise may be challenging to fit into a packed schedule, but attempt to workout at least 45 minutes to an hour, 5 days a week. According to The New York Times, this time frame will potentially prevent weight gain, as well as promote cardiovascular health.
  • As you begin to see results, reward yourself with some spring break items, such as new bikini.

Now that we’ve provided a guide to becoming a bikini goddess ditch the machines and excuses and get started.

7 Essentials for a Not-So-Basic Workout

Staying in bed and snuggling up with a cup of hot chocolate always sounds much better than going to the gym when it is below freezing outside. The hardest part about working out is actually getting there. It’s time to bundle up, grab a friend and get moving ASAP!

1) Grab and Go
An hour before heading to the gym, have a protein bar. Protein keeps hunger at bay, while still giving you enough energy to get through that tough workout! LUNA Protein Mint Chocolate Chip bars are loaded with the right nutrition, are gluten free AND taste like heaven! Protein bars under 200 calories are the best to get you going for a workout.

2) Plug It In
Make a rocking playlist of music to pump up with. Today’s Top 100 is always a great place to start, but don’t forget about the hits of the past. Try “Eye of the Tiger” by Survivor, “Rock You Like a Hurricane” by Scorpions, or even the amazing Cyndi Lauper’s “Girls Just Want to Have Fun.” Listening to music while pumping iron or taking a jog on the treadmill raises your heart rate and gets you going!

3) Keep It Fresh
We get it, the cutest boys are always at the gym, and this seems to be even more true on days when we feel our worst. Don’t fret; most boys are just as insecure! Don’t overdo it with the bronzer, blush, eyeliner or foundation; a clean face that is makeup-free will keep your pores from clogging. And if you want to put on a little something, check out our favorite makeup products to wear to the gym!

4) Cute but Casual
There is an enormous amount of workout gear in the malls today -- even some stylish leggings! But remember, it’s the gym, not a fashion show! Don’t worry about matching a watch with a T-shirt. Be comfortable and feel good while hitting a punching bag; the girl on the elliptical isn’t concerned about who is best dressed at the gym either!

5) Hydration Station
H2O is one of the most important factors when working out. With sweat dripping while burning those calories, don’t forget to refuel! Grab an ice-cold bottle of water and drink up!

6) Kick It Up
We all love shoes, but remember comfort is key. Check out Nike Free Run+ 3 for a lightweight running shoe. Starting at $100, these sneakers come in various colors including orange, pink and green. There’s no reason to feel dragged down while getting moving at the gym!

7) Try Something New
The elliptical and treadmills are great ways to burn off calories, but there is so much more offered at gyms! Zumba classes are easy to follow, effective and make working out fun. Check out a Zumba class, and dance, dance, dance!

We don’t know what you’re waiting for -- get up, get dressed and head on over to the gym!

6 Makeup Products to Bring to the Gym

For beauty fanatics that also love to work out, it may be challenging to go to the gym completely bare-faced. Wearing as little makeup as possible (or none at all) is great for skin, but every once in awhile a little pick-me-up may be needed, even at the gym. The trick is finding the right products with the right formulas so they don’t smudge or run when it’s time to turn up the heat. Here are six products that will enhance natural beauty without creating a “done-up” look.

1. Waterproof Mascara
On the eyes, definition is most important. To achieve definition, curl lashes with a lash curler, and then apply a waterproof mascara from the base of lashes to the tip. The application doesn’t have to be perfect, but make sure to apply an even amount on each eye and try to avoid clumping. One of the best waterproof mascaras is Maybelline’s Lash Discovery Mini-Brush Waterproof Mascara, ($7), which can be found at Ulta or on Amazon.

For light-colored eyelashes, applying mascara is especially important because without noticeable lashes, eyes can appear smaller and less defined. For those blessed with naturally dark and lush lashes, mascara isn’t necessary.

Drugstore alternative: L'Oreal Voluminous Million Lashes Waterproof Mascara, $7

2. Brow Color
For eyebrows, there are two options. For light brows that need to be filled in, or completely drawn on, opt for a waterproof brow color. Stila’s Stay All Day Waterproof Brow Color, ($21), comes in light and medium to match any hair color. Unlike a pencil, this product won’t run or smudge. But if you have darker brows, keep reading.

Drugstore alternative: Cameo Perfect Brow, $7

3. Brow Gel
On the other hand, if you have thick, unruly brows, use a clear brow gel. Sephora released a Transparent Brow Gel, ($12), that is waterproof for maximum staying power. Just run a coat through the brows to smooth the natural shape.

Drugstore alternative: Ardell Brow Sculpting Gel, $5.50

4. Mattifying Mineral Foundation
When you’re at the gym, skin is an extremely important part of a workout. The body’s natural cooling systems open pores for sweat. So caking on a layer of heavy foundation and concealer will only clog pores. A light moisturizer is ideal. Those not comfortable with going au naturale, can apply a mattifying mineral foundation all over the face. BareMinerals’ Matte Mineral Foundation SPF 15, ($27), will provide coverage without clogging pores because it is free of oil, wax and chemicals that can cause breakouts. Also, its mattifying formula can help combat oil buildup from the gym.

Drugstore alternative: Maybelline Mineral Power, $8

5. Waterproof Bronzer
For greater coverage, apply a bronzer on the temples and the hollows of the cheekbones. Tarte’s Matte Waterproof Bronzer, ($29), works on any skintone, is waterproof and doesn’t contain sulfates or synthetic dyes. Blush isn’t necessary because working out will provide a natural rosy flush to the cheeks.

Drugstore alternative: Sally Hansen Waterproof Bronzing Powder, $10

6. Eye Makeup Remover
Makeup remover is essential for removing the difficult-to-wash waterproof products post workout. Try Sephora’s Waterproof Eye Makeup Remover, ($9.50). It’s safe for sensitive eyes and skin.

Drugstore alternative: Neutrogena Eye Makeup Remover, $6.50

The best part about waterproof and long-lasting products is that they are useful for many different occasions. Use this fresh-faced look on days with too little time to retouch makeup, when it’s raining, during the sticky summer months or for a night of dancing.

Now that you have the beauty secrets for hitting the gym, don’t forget a no-slip hair band, iPod, student ID and water bottle!

While You Weren't Sleeping: Are All-Nighters Hurting your GPA?

It’s happened to all of us at one time or another. Without warning, a forgotten project or midterm has crept up out of nowhere and, suddenly, you are left scrambling to meet the deadline. In college, when balancing friends, school, and work, there just doesn’t seem to be enough hours in the day to do it all. So what do we do? Stay up all night; head to Starbucks for coffee, and return to class again for round two. It may often seem necessary to pull an all-nighter in order to pull through on that last minute test or assignment. But did you know that a night spent cramming could actually keep you from getting the A?

A recent series of studies performed at Harvard Medical School and Trent University of Canada found that the brain uses sleep to practice and solidify what it has processed during the day. Eight hours of recommended sleep does not only recharge the body; it can also help us to remember subjects taught in class.

How it Works
While you are sleeping, the brain is hard at work in a process called memory consolidation. Memory consolidation occurs during REM sleep, the deepest level of sleep at which the brain experiences most activity (this is also the sleep stage in which we experience dreams). During this period, the brain is strengthening connections that take information learned during the day and encode it as a memory one can reaccess later, reinforcing that last chemistry equation or additional historic date.

In addition to helping us retain information, the amount of sleep we get can also play a significant role in how much we learn the following day.

Dr. Robert Sickgold, professor of psychiatry at Harvard University, stresses that if we do not get enough sleep the night before; our brains will be too tired to take in information. “Some of this has to do with an inability to pay attention,” he states, “there seems to be something in the memory circuits in the brain that gets fatigued so that you don’t learn as well.”

While in class, students who are sleep deprived will be less focused, losing their ability to take in important details and be unable to receive information fully.

How many hours of sleep should one get each night?

According to Dr. William Dement, an expert on sleep deprivation, the average college student should be getting over eight hours of sleep a night. When this number is not met, a “sleep debt” will build up and the amount of sleep hours lost will begin to affect our abilities. The only solution to reducing this is by getting additional hours of sleep to recharge our bodies.

Try Setting a Bedtime

Yes, you may have not had one since middle school, but setting a bedtime is an effective way to ensure enough sleep. Try setting a goal time each night in which you will be in your room and winding down. Remember: getting yourself to bed earlier will help to retain what you have learned the day before. So go to bed! You will wake up the next day ready to focus and well prepared for the school day ahead.

The Crossfit Workout: What You Should Know

Last month, I wanted to challenge myself with a new fitness plan. I’ve always loved Pilates, barre, yoga and spin, but I decided to try something more intensive and very different from what I am normally used to. I chose to give Crossfit a try after hearing so much about it. Admittedly, the people who have raved about Crossfit to me have primarily been guys, so given that, I was definitely hesitant and even a little afraid. I researched it by watching videos, reading success stories, and looking into the Paleo diet (eating like the cavemen did), which all “Crossfitters” swear by.

I started on a Monday at 6:30 a.m. This was a huge challenge for me because I am someone who can’t get out of bed unless something really important is happening. I woke up before the sun, laced my shoes, and headed for the “Box,” which is what Crossfit calls the gyms. I walked in to find music blasting, people sweating like crazy and defying gravity by hanging on poles and climbing ropes. I instantly knew that I was in over my head and proceeded with caution.

For the first two to three weeks, this particular box requires that all new members join a class that teaches the basics. I learned how to do deadlifts, kettleball throws and all sorts of presses, all involving contraptions that I generally avoid at the gym. What was really great about these first classes was that looking stupid is not possible. You might think that you look stupid when you’re trying to overhead-press a barbell, but it’s reassuring to know that everyone else looks the same, and quite frankly, no one cares. People grunt, yell, get red in the face -- all to get in shape and challenge their bodies. Before doing the Workout of the Day (WOD), people are upset. No one wants to run a mile, row 2000 meters and then run another mile for time. No one wants to do three reps of pull-ups after push-ups, burpees and kettle ball throws. But as much as the workouts suck, these people keep returning day after day because it works.

What really struck me was on how much fun everyone has. Yes, weighted planks are awful and wall balls (my personal love-to-hate exercise) make you question why you’re doing this to yourself, but after that dreaded circuit and after it’s all over, you will feel like a million bucks, albeit drenched in sweat and looking a little crazy. Everyone leaves class smiling, joking, and although at times, it looks as though it is difficult to walk, they are happy and ready to take on the day.

After my first session, I returned two days later again at 6:30 and was ready to learn some more. I was sore in places I didn’t know could be sore (armpits?!) and I felt stronger. I am a strong believer in mixing things up in order to get results, which may explain my memberships to all different studios, and I am really glad that I finally came around to trying Crossfit. Of course, things have yet to get really hard because I’m still in the beginner’s class and still learning the basics. I haven’t had the ultimate a**-kicking just yet. But, I watch with envy while the veterans run a mile with sandbags and push tires around. I’m still doing assisted pull-ups and my push-ups are still on my knees, but each time it gets better. I’m excited to keep this up for a month and see how I change and toughen up both physically and mentally.

If you're looking for a new twist on your usual workout and really want to get your butt kicked, Crossfit may just become your love-to-hate hobby.

3 Ways You Can Get Yourself to Drink More Water

We all know drinking water is good for us. There are numerous studies on the benefits of drinking eight cups of water a day, including better skin, a healthier immune system, and less dehydration. So why is it so hard to drink that much water? Do you often forget water or substitute it with something else? Here are our favorite ways to drink more water:

Carry a water bottle at all times.
Most of the time, I don't drink water simply because I forget to. Having a water bottle with me at all times reminds me to drink up. Invest in a BPA-free water bottle, then bring it to your desk, classes, the library, and the gym.

Add lemon slices, strawberries, or your fruit of choice.
Adding fruit can make water just a little more interesting and not so bland. A great way to do this is to take a pitcher of water, cut up a few strawberries or lemons (or both), and leave the pitcher in the refrigerator. The next time you're thirsty, drink up. The water will have a hint of whatever fruit you put in it.

Replace other drinks when you sip mindlessly
Do you ever grab a coffee or soda before you start watching TV or a movie, and suddenly it's gone by the end and you don't remember drinking it? Try doing this with water. Grab a large glass of water or your water bottle, then sit back and let your body sip mindlessly.

What are your tricks to drinking more water?

Healthy and Fit Is Beautiful: Kate Upton Controversy

It seems as though the definition of skinny and the definition of too skinny are blurring; and unfortunately, for many of us who ultimately want to be healthy, it’s getting harder and harder to see what is good for our bodies and what is not.

It recently came to my attention that people on pro-anorexia and “thinspiration” websites were attacking Kate Upton, the “Sports Illustrated” swimsuit cover girl, for being fat. I’m not sure exactly by what standards she was considered to be fat (she is reported to have measurements at 36-25-34 at 5’11), but these websites have slammed her for not being thin.

It’s hard to imagine what is supposed to be beautiful, if being healthy and fit is not. Are you supposed to be emaciated with two percent body fat? Or maybe your collarbones are supposed to protrude from your body for these hateful websites to get off your back. Upton is beautifully fit, and in my opinion, as well as millions of others, and she is a skinny girl who works out to maintain her figure and is proud of it, too. She is a model. So many women, I’m sure, would kill for her figure, and it is really sad to see such backlash against her.

Celebrity images are overexposed in our culture and nearly all of them have their bodies scrutinized, day in and day out. We see when they change their hair color, break up with their significant others, and very prevalently, if they gain weight (or merely look like they might have at all). As such significant figures in our lives, if we call any celebrity “fat,” there’s a message that is being sent to America’s youth, saying that if you’re bigger than this celebrity, or anything like her, you’re too fat. If you’re as skinny as this super tiny celebrity, then you might be the right size. It is impossible to be anything like those celebrities because they’re simply not real and mostly an image that they must maintain.

It is my hope that people, particularly teenage girls, will see that healthy and fit is beautiful and not obscenely rail thin and emaciated. Ribs and bones are not hot, but abs and definition are! So, eat right and exercise well to stay healthy and happy.

The Freshman 15: How to Avoid It

With rumors of the Freshman 15 trend swirling around in your head, picking your meal plan for college may seem like a daunting task. You like to eat, but you don’t want to eat too much and gain the extra weight. If you pick a more expensive plan and end up with leftover money, the gorging of any and everything to finish off your meal plan will lead up to a steady rush of weight gain. Don’t even forget about those campus restaurants!

But I digress…

I went to seek advice from upperclassmen on how to save fellow freshman, like me, from joining the Freshman 15 train. Here are a few of the tips that they gave me regarding the dining halls.
  • Pizza is one of the fattest things to order with all the carbs from the bread and cheese. The best approach is to tackle the sandwiches. They are the best because they are handmade to your liking and healthy altogether.
  • I would suggest skipping the daily ice cream, and avoid getting everything that looks too good. People who live on campus tend to take more than they can eat, so they tend to overindulge and overeat.
  • I would say to avoid the dessert bar. Maybe limit yourself to a treat on Friday. Also, check calorie counts on your school's website. All of the food has a lot more calories than you’d think.
  • Avoid your typical burgers and pizza, and go for a salad instead, because nothing tastes as good as skinny feels.
  • The fries! Getting fries with every meal can add up. Try another side dish. Even if there are mashed potatoes or something, it’s better than French fries.
Avoiding the Freshman 15 is not only about what you eat or how much of it, but the new lifestyle you plan to live. Finally being free of the parental advice to “eat your vegetables,” leaves you ultimately in control of your health.

“Having food available 24/7 is a hard thing to avoid,” one upperclassman said. “I think a lot of the issue is when you eat as much as it is what you eat.”

“The biggest thing for me was late night food runs,” another upperclassman said. “At least a couple times a week, I would get a text late at night asking me if I wanted to go get food!”

In your tuition and fees, there is probably some allotment for use of the fitness and recreational facilities. USE IT! One student said that he gained weight his freshman year, but it was muscle. He said that he biked and walked around his campus and the local town. “If you do that, then you’ll have nothing to worry about,” he said.

In the end, don’t let the Freshman 15 scare you. Figure out what type of lifestyle you want to live, and live it. Who knows ... you may be too busy enjoying campus life to overeat!

Healthy Habits: Protein Shakes

During my summer quest to slim down and be healthier, I have tried to go beyond my comfort zone and recently began looking for protein shakes to try. I always thought that protein shakes were only for guys, especially those who eat raw eggs for breakfast and bench a thousand pounds. But, to my surprise, protein shakes can actually be really beneficial for girls, too, given you consume the right kind with the right ingredients.

As you may already know, protein can be consumed for muscle mass, but it can also be beneficial for weight loss. Protein shakes in a diet are supposed to be consumed like food— as a meal replacement for less than 300 calories, and they can really help fulfill your weight loss goals. Especially with ingredients that help sustain energy levels better than carbs do like soy (antioxidant-like qualities) and casein (slow-absorbing and can keep you from getting hungry too soon), protein shakes are really gaining popularity even among young women.

I was interested in post-workout shakes and found that protein shakes are really great for nourishment right after a tough workout. They allow the body to recover by restoring muscle glycogen, which fuels your body and depletes during a workout. In addition, shakes can help sustain energy levels. Those who exercise regularly need more energy than those who don’t, so those who do exercise regularly can really benefit from protein shakes. Whey is a key ingredient in post-workout shakes, and it is fast absorbing, which is important for your body when it needs its protein fast in its post-workout or catabolic state. In addition, whey protein helps decrease recovery time after a workout and quickens muscle repair, keeping you in good shape before your next workout.

Whey protein also is really good for the vegetarians out there. Increased levels of protein are necessary for those who don’t eat meat, especially if you’re trying to get in shape or take your fitness to the next level.

If you’re interested in what protein shakes can do for you, consider looking at your local GNC or Nutrishop (my personal favorite!) for a protein powder that’s best for your exercise regimen and lifestyle.

Why You Should Work Out Outdoors

Working out inside at a gym can be really suffocating. There are guys stomping around, lifting weights heavier than we are, runners thumping on the treadmill for what seems like hours and just an overall aggressive mindset. Take your workouts outdoors, and you’ll be exposed to the fresh oxygen and sunshine that can really do you good; this will make what would otherwise be a dreaded and stuffy workout actually fun.

If you like to run, find a route that you know will eventually bring you back home. I like to find loops that will bring me back to where I started, not straight shot trails that leave me three miles away from where I want to be. It sounds really simple, but not having to see the same thing twice has really made a difference for me mentally.

In gyms, the air is recycled, and even if the gym boasts that it has air purifiers that clean the air, you’re still inside and you’re still breathing the air that the guy next to you exhaled. When you’re outside, you’re able to get a lot of fresh air, especially in the morning when the air is crisp and cold. Even taking a walk outside in the morning is something I love to do to wake up and get a little workout in. The fresh oxygen you’re getting will pump your blood and get you going, not to mention that it will make your workout a little more invigorating and get your endorphins flowing.

Taking your workout outside means you’re going to get exposed to sunshine, and who doesn’t like a nice tan? Break out your tank tops, and don’t forget the SPF because on your outdoor run you’re bound to get a little color. Tanned and toned...what more could we want? I love getting a little color on my shoulders after a good run or hike outside.

While the sun is shining and the temperatures are high, it’s best to avoid running or working out when the sun is hottest around noon. I like to take my workouts outside either before the afternoon or after around 5 p.m. to prevent too much sun damage and overheating.

This summer, try taking a hike or taking a walk outside, and if it’s not too hot from the current heat waves across the country, go for a run, and you will start seeing the benefits!

Healthy Habits for the College Girl: Transverse Abs

Gone are the days of repetitive crunches and sit-ups! If you’re looking for flat abs and a strong core to support your spine, you should be working your transverse abdominal region. This region is small and often overlooked because we think that crunches and sit-ups are all we need to sculpt our abs. But to keep our spines safe and stable, the transverse abdominals are what need to be strengthened. This is accomplished not by thousands of crunches, which create the vanity abs, but by tightening the core and the muscles of the pelvic floor, it literally acts as a corset for your waist.

In Pilates, ballet and yoga classes, ab workouts involve a lot of breathing. That sounds crazy and irrelevant, but try a plank and exhale deeply. You’ll feel your abs contract and with each exhale you’re tightening your transverse abs and creating a flat tummy. Visualize your belly button reaching your spine as you breathe out. You’ll feel your abs contract immediately.

If planks aren’t your thing (I know they’re not my favorite), consider lying on your back with your knees up at 90 degrees, legs and feet parallel to the ground. Then, exhale completely and bring your belly button into your spine. Hold that contraction in your core and slowly bring your feet to touch the ground, but make sure to let your abs do all the work. If you feel that your back is arching, press your lower back to the ground and get rid of the space between you and your mat. When you keep your lower back on the ground and breathe out as you move your toes to the ground, it will activate your transverse abs and fire up your core. The hardest part is keeping your back from arching and not letting your legs do their job.

Another exercise to try is the C-curve. Sit up tall on your rear with your knees bent out in front of you. Cup your hands under your thighs and relax your shoulders. Slowly roll back as if someone has punched your lower stomach, and make sure that your body is curved around the punch. While you roll back, exhale, keeping the curve in your spine. Visualize your body creating a “C” shape and not a “V.” When you keep your back straight, it will only hurt your spine and won’t work your abs! Hold the C-curve and continue to exhale while bringing your belly button to your spine. If you’re looking for a challenge, lift your arms above your head and slowly curl back an inch and then come up an inch, all while holding the contraction. You are guaranteed to feel the burn.

The best part about these exercises is that they are easy to do in the comfort of your own home. They don’t require large machines or even any weights to be effective. Try adding these exercises to your workout regimen, and I bet you won’t be disappointed.

Boost Your Energy for Finals with Mate!

Looking for a kick of caffeine to power you through the endless trudge of final exams? Before you reach for your can of Red Bull or gulp down a pot of coffee, consider what you’re about to put into your body. Highly caffeinated, sugary beverages such as energy drinks and coffee contain absolutely no nutritional value. They give you transitory sugar highs and boosts of energy only to ultimately deplete your body of fluids and make you crash to the ground.

Instead of guzzling one of these standard college study stimulants, consider sipping on Mate, a natural energy-inducing beverage packed with antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. Similar in taste to green tea, Mate is popular in South America and is made by steeping the leaves of the Yerba Mate plant in hot water. It has become a healthier alternative to coffee, as it contains less caffeine, but still delivers a similar energy boost. While coffee provides an ephemeral lift by stimulating the central nervous system, Mate has a stimulating effect on myocardial tissue, but produces relaxation on smooth muscle tissue.

Coffee can keep your eyes wide awake long after you’ve finished studying, but Mate is actually known to reduce insomnia while improving your ability to focus. It contains 90% more antioxidants than green tea, a fact that combined with the amount of minerals, vitamins and amino acids, has a balancing effect on the caffeine. Religious Mate drinkers claim to have increased mental energy, clarity and focus without the debilitating side effects of caffeine crashes from energy drinks or coffee.

Not only will this tea-like beverage increase your mental acuity while you’re busy cramming, but it will also aid digestion and help control your weight (even as you’re rifling through your mom’s thoughtful care package of study snacks). Yerba Mate stimulates waste elimination and helps reduce the stomach bacteria that often leads to bad breath. The leaves also have stimulant qualities that decrease your appetite and will make you feel fuller for longer periods of time. Regularly sipping on Mate has been a South American cultural tradition for centuries, especially in impoverished areas where people can’t afford to be hungry. Today though, more and more people are including Mate in their healthy diet and exercise regimens as it boosts your metabolism to burn more calories and curbs appetites for increased weight loss.

Like any stimulant, drinking too much Mate can be unhealthy. In fact, several studies have expressed a possible link between Yerba Mate and certain cancers. However, if you’re looking for a reliable, natural pick-me-up that will not weigh down on your body during exam time, Mate is a positive alternative to other unhealthy energy boosters.

Five Spring Nail Colors Every Girl Should Try

A great nail colour is an essential part of every fashionable girl’s wardrobe. Whether you’re decorating your fingers or your toes, choosing the right colour isn’t always easy. Between matching that season’s colors, your outfit that day, or equivalent shades from different lines, things can get overwhelming.

To help make things a little easier, here’s a short list of great colours that every Fashionista should try to work into their nail colour rotation, or at least take out for a spin when she’s feeling a little adventurous.

1. White

Many women think white polish isn’t wearable unless it’s part of a French manicure, but white on its own is a great colour for nails. A full nail of white makes you seem daring, and willing to take exciting fashion risks. The first time you try white, it might take a little getting used to, but it will quickly grow on you as a great color to complement any outfit.

2. Purple

OPI, Lincoln Park After Dark

Purple polish conveys power and femininity. No wonder it’s the go-to colour for royalty! Try a grape shade if you’re not yet comfortable with this bold colour. But if you’re ready to go all out, try for a deep, rich purple that will catch people’s eye.

3. Orange
Essie, Orange It's Obvious

Orange polish is a great colour for shorter nails, and conveys a sense of youth and excitement. It’s a colour that you can’t help but notice, and you’ll probably get lots of compliments when you take this shade out for a spin.

4. Jade
OPI, Jade is the New Black

A deep dark jewel-toned jade polish gives any outfit instant pizzazz. Green is a colour that oozes style, and jade especially conveys the sense that you’re a woman in control. Think Uma Thurman as Poison Ivy, but without the deadly seduction!

5. Black
NYX, Matte in Black

Although some still it see it as a nail colour strictly for the Emo crowd, black polish gives any manicure a polished and perfected look. Best on longer nails, black polish on a well-manicured hand portrays discipline and organization. Wouldn’t you like to be considered responsible because you chose a great nail colour that day?

Whatever colour you choose to rock, remember to try to experiment every now and again. Peruse your closest drug store, and pick new shades that are outside of your usual palette. You’ll be surprised at the number of new colours you’ll discover and how many of them you’ll absolutely love.

Orthorexia: Plagued by Healthy Eating

At an age when Whole Foods is fashionable and veganism is venerated, it is only natural to adopt healthy eating habits. But if all you’re consuming is carrot sticks and celery stalks, an obsession to resemble your veggies’ slim silhouettes may begin to consume you. Repelling the American stereotypes of obesity and over-consumption, young women often develop a type of eating disorder that is less distinct than anorexia or bulimia. Characterized by an unhealthy fixation on healthy eating, orthorexia is the result of compulsive diet restrictions.

Coined in 1997 by Steven Bratman, M.D., the term orthorexia is still not formally accepted by the DSM-V, a resource used by mental health professionals to diagnose and research disorders. Scientific knowledge of the disease is limited and most doctors disagree with giving patients a separate diagnosis, connecting the symptoms to an anxiety disorder or the early stages of a different eating disorder.

Cynthia Bulik, director of the eating disorders program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, tells TIME Magazine, "We don't want people to be mislabeled and not get the care they need because they're actually on the slippery slope to anorexia."

In order for people to actually get the care they need, orthorexia does need a separate diagnosis. Unlike anorexia and bulimia, othorexics do not limit the amount of food they consume, and they do not harbor any guilt about their restrictive eating habits. Conversely, people with orthorexia are proud of their ability to maintain such “healthy” lifestyles and scorn those who are so weak as to consume junk food. Their disorder is made harmful by their rigid restrictions to specific foods (such as a diet limited to fruits and vegetables) and concerted focus on what they eat each day. Orthorexics need to be made aware that their restricted eating is not healthy, and to receive the proper psychological attention so that their obsession over food does not spiral into serious medical problems.

When people have orthorexia, they often fail to receive certain essential nutrients, depending on their individual diet restrictions. If a girl who is afraid to consume fat, for example, completely cuts dairy and cheese out of her diet, she could develop osteopenia, a precursor of osteoporosis triggered by her avoidance of calcium. Anemia is another common health defect caused by orthorexia and is acquired by a deficiency of iron.

Once orthorexia is diagnosed as a problem, the effects of the disease have often already consumed the inflicted person. An orthorexic often becomes socially isolated because they plan their life around food and have little room for anything but tracking their food intake. They forget what is truly important in the world and begin to lose the spice in their life.

Dr. Bratman, who went through orthorexia, states, “I pursued wellness through healthy eating for years, but gradually I began to sense that something was going wrong. The poetry of my life was disappearing. My ability to carry on normal conversations was hindered by intrusive thoughts of food.”

If you think that you or a friend may be developing signs of orthorexia, here are a few questions to ask yourself:

  • Do you/they restrict eating food served at parties or social events?
  • Do you/they target specific ingredients in foods and avoid them regardless of the portion size?
  • Do you/they plan tomorrow’s food today?
  • Do you/they realize that as the healthy quality of your/their diet has increased, the quality of life has diminished in parallel?
  • Do you/they sacrifice once enjoyed experiences to eat more healthily?
  • Do you/they feel proud when eating healthy food and look down on others who don’t eat the same way?
  • Do you/they feel guilt or self-loathing when straying away from a restricted diet?

If you answered yes to at least two of these questions, you or your friend could be in danger of being orthorexic. It is important to consult a school psychologist if this is the case, and admit that your obsessive healthfulness is a diagnosable problem.

It’s okay to want to limit your intake of potato chips or candy, and it’s great to implement healthy eating into your everyday lifestyle. Whatever it is that you’re eating, though, you shouldn’t let food consume your life, or you’ll miss out on truly living.

I’m not saying you should go back to your dorm and devour an entire pizza after class, but know that it’s okay to eat a cheeseburger every once in a while.
