Essential Fall/Winter Accessory: Scarves

Your outfit for the day looks great. It’s almost perfect, but there’s something missing. You’ve tried on some jewelry, but nothing is working. Maybe it’s your hairstyle? Nope. Your top? No, you can’t change that.

So, what do you need to complete your outfit? Over the layers of warmth, you might want to top it off with a scarf. Scarves are always trendy - not to mention versatile and your basic fall/winter essential. Who doesn’t own a scarf?

There are different scarf designs and styles. In this case, we’re mainly talking about the basic winter scarf. The pattern or material doesn’t matter too much—just make sure it’s an adequate length and not too thick or heavy.

Thanks to Michelle Phan for creating an always helpful YouTube video: 7 ways to wear a scarf.

Turtle-neck
The Knot
The Bow
The Loop
Cross-cross
Cardigan (use with cardigan or blazer)
Circle/Infinity scarf
The Big Knot

The weather is dipping down into the lows of 60s and 50s, maybe even colder (or warmer) depending on your location. As the wintry weather quickly approaches boots, sweaters and coats are making an appearance on the sidewalks of campuses. Hoodies are no longer sufficient.

Dress up your look by using a scarf and trying out these new ways. You’ll be bundled up and warm for any football, soccer or hockey games that your school is crazy about.

Jewelry and other fine accessories can add glam to your outfit, but scarves are so cozy and warm that you can wear them multiple ways. Not to mention they’re not ridiculously expensive. It’s a win for everyone.

It's Not Over Yet: Motivation After Thanksgiving Break

Unfortunately, breaks must come to an end. Enduring the last couple weeks of the semester is a brutal challenge for many of us. Waking up to an annoying and unwanted alarm clock that takes us away from a nice dream and making us come out of blankets and covers is nothing admirable, but it must be done.

"I don’t want to go to class," you might say. Or, "I’m so tired…Agh, why must I get up??" Instead of the negative attitude and being cranky, think about positive things. Don’t be a grump, because no one likes a grump. You’ll bring down others and dim everyone’s day. Instead, strive to be that friend or stranger who makes others smile and bring happiness on what may seem to be another, horrible day of classes.

Yes, coming back from Thanksgiving break is painful, but just remember: only two (or three) weeks until you get to go home for almost a month! It’s worth the struggles—build up perseverance knowing that you can and will make it through finals week.

You will ace your tests, because you will have studied long and hard for them. Limit your stress and worries, because it will decrease your ability to do well on your exams. Eat healthy, exercise for at least 30 minutes each day—it’s a great stress reliever and takes your mind off of things.

On some down time, during a weekend, or during a study break, make a gift list for all your closest friends and family, make some Christmas (or birthday?) cards! Write a letter or create some ornaments/decorations for your dorm (or apartment). Be creative, enjoy the season.

Dress up. OK, so maybe it’s not the best time to be thoughtful about your appearance, especially when you’re spending your life in the library or study room, but if you continue to take care of yourself, it’ll give you a mood booster and heighten your self-esteem. There’s nothing better than feeling confident in such a time as this. Play up your fall wardrobe…feels like winter is already here! If you do not have a desire to maintain such an appearance, then work the sweats. Anyone can look cute in sweats—honestly. A nice ponytail, a little makeup, comfy sweats and you’re set.

Now is not the time to procrastinate. Encourage yourself and your friends/classmates to get homework, readings, and/or papers done before they begin to pile up. You’ll thank yourself later when you can spend more time relaxing knowing that you have already completed your work.

If you do this, you’ll have the opportunity to get a head start on studying for finals, even though that’s such an awful thought. But I’m sure it will pay off when you’re sitting in the classroom with a pencil in hand as you begin to take your final exam. We’re almost there…one semester down, one more to go.

It's Not About the Size

You’ve seen it a million times. These thin, picturesque models in fashion advertisements in magazines such as “GQ,” “Vogue,” “Bazaar” and “Cosmopolitan” have you envious and perhaps a bit depressed. You want to be thin. You want to be that woman in the ad that has long legs, a perfect skin tone, a gorgeous photogenic face…the perfect everything.

You’ve also been told it’s an illusion. It’s called Photoshop to the max and stylists galore. But sometimes we can’t help but wish we were slimmer and more toned, to have a different body shape than what we’ve been given, to be a size 0.

Lisa Kimelman discovers fashion as she deals with her husband’s trial in “Elle’s” October issue:

“José, so patient with my fashion prejudices for so long, finally seemed to have reached the end of his rope: ‘Do you think people you see on the street who look meticulous, do you think the just walk into a store and buy something that fits them? Everybody alters. That’s why they look so great.’

She continued:

“It was a revelation to me: Everybody alters? You mean they don’t all fit naturally into beautiful clothes? They don’t all know instinctively which heels to wear with leggings? They aren’t all size 00 and earning $250,000 a year…?”

We’re not all supposed to be size 0, nor is it necessary to be a size 0. How is a sexy, curvaceous woman supposed to fit herself into a size 00 skinny jean? Not possible. Does that mean she has to lose weight? NO. It means she has to fit the perfect-fitting jean that suits her body the way that it is. We alter the clothes to fit us, not the other way around.

If you’re a naturally thin girl, embrace that. Find clothing that flatters your slenderness and that gives you curves and shape where you may not have any. This may include ruffles, pencil skirts, bows, artistic designs/patterns, etc.

Those of you who have a bigger build, don’t ever be ashamed. Wear clothes that accentuate your waistline and flattering features. Wide leg pants, V-necks, tunics, etc.

Don’t forget about the luxury of comfort. But don’t be so absent-minded that you forget that you should look nice everyday, no matter what. Sweats are good now and then, but not all the time.

Dress to impress, but most importantly, dress to show off your self-esteem and confidence, because you know everyone alters, and being a size 0 isn’t everything in life.

Victoria's Secret: A Fashion Show and So Much More

It’s all about the angels. A number of artists, including Maroon 5, Nicki Minaj, Kanye West and Jay-Z, will perform at the dazzling 2011 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, which will air on CBS on Tuesday, November 29 at 10 p.m. (ET/PT) for those who crave new fashion or adore shopping at Victoria’s Secret.

Last year, “the show was the most-watched network program in its time slot with about 9 million U.S. viewers, up from 7.5 million in 2007, according to Nielsen. It also airs in more than 90 other countries.”

The angels will don electronic wings this year, something new and extravagant. The show also includes “six themes, 31 pairs of wings, 38 models and 69 looks...” all of which are covered in Victoria’s Secret glamor. (Source)

On the day of the actual show, the glamorous girls dressed in their pink silk robes had their hair done by Orlando Pita. He focused on “loose, undone waves, while makeup guru Tom Pecheux applied toned-down makeup, focusing on Marilyn Monroe-inspired cat eyes and flushed cheeks.” Pecheux decided to go aú naturale for this season’s show. No fake eyelashes here.

But there were glittering, outdone outfits according to themes including “Super Angel,” “Passion,” and “I Put a Spell on You.” Dramatic outfits and wings glimmered on-stage, from radiant red lingerie to poppin’ neon PINK outfits.

Victoria’s Secret has some promotions going on now from PJs to lingerie. With a $10 purchase, you can receive a free secret reward card ($10-$500), free shipping on sleepwear, free lip gloss set with sweater purchase, free tote with PINK purchase, and if you’re in need for undies, you can get 7 for $26.

The Best Deals for You: Black Friday and Cyber Monday

It’s only natural that black Friday promotions and sales are being advertised like crazy right now. Everywhere you turn, or click, you see an ad or promo about getting a sneak peek of what will be on sale tomorrow.

But before Black Friday and Cyber Monday, where the deals will be taken left and right, take into consideration some purchases that will benefit you and your wallet.

When it comes down to it, taxes and shipping fees (if buying online) are completely ridiculous. They jack up the initial price of an item and leave you feeling defeated. There goes that good deal. Fortunately, a lot of sellers, stores and businesses realize this and are offering a lot of free shipping opportunities and discounts/sales on favorite or popular items ahead of time.

My inbox is filled with sales, discount codes and offers that are sometimes tempting. The words “FREE SHIPPING!” or “40% OFF” scream in your face, making yourself wonder if this is an opportunity to purchase something for a small price.

Although stores are having a lot of great deals now, many will still wait out until Black Friday or Cyber Monday-- two of the biggest shopping days of the year. Who can resist?

Whether you’re looking for some clothes, accessories, shoes, electronics, furniture or other miscellaneous items, there’s got to be a deal sometime and somewhere. Cyber Monday and Black Friday are not necessarily the times for the absolute BEST deals, but sometimes they are. Occasionally, the best deals come after the two big days or after the holiday season.

I don’t know if Black Friday and/or Cyber Monday are the best days for apparel shopping, but there might be more savings this year, since the Internet has become the ultimate source for so much in today’s society. I’ve received emails from Banana Republic to Victoria’s Secret that are becoming a part of the shopping tradition.

If you plan on participating in theses two days, do some research before lining up at 3 a.m. at your favorite store, or if you’re in your home, sitting in front of your computer screen, be sure you’ve got some knowledge about what sites have the best bargain for you, as the consumer.

For Black Friday, look at multiple ads and see which store has the best offer. Personally, I usually go to a few places, not too many because of the insanity and long lines. Only go to the places you need to. Most of us like to avoid the craziness of this day.

Then, for Cyber Monday, where there are no lines, except for maybe a lag in Internet connection, do not buy unnecessary items that may be calling your name. Impulse buys are the worst, especially if you’re tight on money this year. The whole “FREE SHIPPING with $50 purchase” is tricky. And don’t forget promo codes! This may be the easiest way for you to get your shopping done, but don’t forget about classes (unless of course you have off…)

Seriously though, we are college students and not all of us have unlimited spending money. Think before you purchase! Do not overspend! The little things do matter and if you honestly cannot afford presents for all your family and friends, then small gifts can work.

Best wishes and try not to get trampled.

The New "It" Girl: Elizabeth Olsen

Say goodbye to the twin duo Mary-Kate and Ashley and say hello to Lizzie Olsen. Elizabeth Olsen, that is. The roles have been reversed and now this 22-year-old rising actress is making headlines, turning heads to see what she has to offer.

Olsen landed her first cover on the October issue of "Nylon" magazine and was featured in the September issue of "GQ," which focused on her role in the thriller "Martha Marcy May Marlene." The dramatic, search-for-identity film has rounded up positive reviews, posts and comments about Olsen’s role as lead character, Martha. Oscar buzz is already brewing.

“The 22-year old actress is transfixing. The only count against her is that she happens to be an Olsen,” the Entertainment section of "Time" magazine said. Mary-Kate and Ashley may have received most of the attention for the past decade or so, but this beauty is rising to the top, joining her sisters in their stardom.

Olsen is already established in the movie industry. She filmed in a psychological thriller “Red Lights” with Robert DeNiro and Sigourney Weaver, which is in post production and waiting to be debuted in 2012. In addition, she starred in a comedy drama, “Liberal Arts,” co-starring Zac Efron.

Her first role, however, was in “Peace, Love and Misunderstanding,” which is scheduled to be released this year. "Time" also reports that Olsen will be shooting “Very Good Girls,” working alongside Dakota Fanning and Dustin Hoffman.

“I wasn’t naive to how I would be perceived when I decided to choose to act,” Olsen told "Time" Entertainment. “I’ve been asked the question about what it’s like growing up with famous sisters since I was seven years old. I feel like I’ve been talking about them forever.”

Not anymore. Olsen has been named as the ‘Next Big Thing’ “from the moment people first saw the film at January’s Sundance Film Festival,” "Entertainment Weekly" said.

It’s without a doubt that this third-wheel Olsen sister is no longer hitched along for the ride. She has potential for great success, taking inspiration and hope from her older sisters.

“The thing with my sisters is, they are great business women and incredibly creative,” she said to TIME. “They created this fashion empire and they are only 25 years old. My sisters represent to me women who have the strongest work ethic I know.”

Olsen also gets her quirky style from Mary-Kate and Ashley. Elizabeth is making more appearances on the carpet and on television shows, showcasing not only her talent on the big screen, but her fashion sensibility. Mary-Kate and Ashley’s new fashion line has gained popularity, but many will be looking to see what Elizabeth will be wearing in future events.

With a mix of boho, menswear, inspiring layering techniques and unique personality, Olsen is trying it all out. She’s not afraid of making an independent statement along the lines of the fashion industry. Even if that means kicking it back and wearing beanies and scarves, it’s clear that Olsen likes to keep it comfy and casual...it happens when you’re a college student and rising actress.

Nothing is stopping this new "it" girl from sharing her own story and setting aside the endless questions about being a sister of the Olsen twins.

"Breaking Dawn Part 1": Why the Obsession?

(Cue screaming fan girls.) OK OK, so we all know the story. Edward Cullen and Isabella (“Bella”) Swan, vampire meets human. They fall in love, but we can’t forget Jacob Black, a werewolf, who also loves Bella: the ultimate love triangle. And there happens to be other vampires that attempt to kill Bella, and a group of superior vampires, the Volturi, who are waiting for Bella to be turned into a vampire at the moment. Cut scene.

That wasn’t the best summary of "Twilight," "New Moon," and "Eclipse," but seriously, unless you’ve been living under a rock, you know the storyline and plot. [And you can always Google it.]

There are diehard fans who would faint at the presence of Robert Pattinson (Edward) or Taylor Lautner (Jacob) (or maybe you’re rebellious and loving one of Edward’s brothers or Taylor’s werewolf pack). And there are the anti-Twilight saga people who think this book series is insanity.

My communication theory professor introduced today’s assigned reading with "Breaking Dawn." “Why are people so obsessed with this story of Edward and Bella?” she asked.

It’s a legitimate question, and we’ve all asked it once or twice. Some think people are just crazy and stupid for enjoying the saga and don’t understand what the big deal is. It’s nothing like the real vampire stories of Dracula. Vampires can’t go out in daylight. They don’t have superpowers like hearing others’ thoughts, seeing into the future or playing mind tricks. And they most certainly do not sparkle.

So why the craze?

Our professor’s explanation (which dealt with our chapter reading) made sense. Ultimately, we are story-telling beings. In other words, we enjoy stories and listening to them. As humans, we’re drawn into stories that we hear or tell. It’s only natural.

Bella is portrayed as an average, ordinary girl. She isn’t athletic; rather she is sort of clumsy and awkward. A typical teenager you could say. Then Edward comes along and becomes someone we all want (and maybe need).

Don’t say this isn’t the truth. We all want someone who will be our protector and true love, someone who will do anything for us that would rather die than face separation.

It’s madness, but if you think about it, beyond the fan girls and blares of screams that are incessant, there lies a truth to all of it.

Casual Sophistication: Trends for This Winter

It’s already November. The leaves are gorgeous hues now: reds, oranges, yellows and browns. These natural neutrals were integrated into fashion designers’ catwalk appearances this fall during the fashion shows around the world: New York City, Paris, London, Milan, you name it.

H&M Women’s Fashion Trends YouTube video revealed that this fall and winter, the latest looks are “easy to wear” and “not overly girly.” Of course we’ve recognized the desire for luscious pink chiffon dresses and skirts before, but not this season. It’s about controlled looks that have “different influences from different decades.” Fashion designers have taken '70s-chic vibes to create their latest collections.

This winter, you can find the “romantic mood” of colors set in, along with sheer-like material - but cover up, ladies. No one needs to see your bra. But this sheer material that is becoming popular allows women to feel equally sexy and luxurious.

Luxury fabrics are a key statement, too. Silks are back and ever so smooth. Faux fur is still in, whether that be a scarf or wrap or vest, you’re good to go.

Outerwear is an obvious essential for winter. Trench coats, parkers, and even capes are this year’s fashions, and of course, you can’t go wrong with a classic peacoat. To warm yourself up when the snow starts to fall with that gushing wind that freezes your limbs and face, grab some cozy knitwear that will surely keep you snug. Scarves and boyfriend cardigans are examples you can include in your wardrobes.

Zigzag patterns with “artisanal [and] patchwork techniques” are also all the rage this winter season. They offer contrast and “bam” effect to a simple outfit that has little design or mixture of colors.

This winter, designers are focusing on “comfy, soft, and warm” desirable clothing. It’s only natural that we’re drawn to material that makes us feel comfortable and incredibly stylish at the same time.
