How to Style a Graphic Tee and Still Look On Point

I love the graphic tee trend, but sometimes feel like I look a little juvenile when I just wear them with jeans or leggings. But wearing graphic tees doesn't have to be sloppy! Here are a few ways to style them and still look chic and glam:

1. Put a blazer over it
Blazers are not just office wear anymore. Wearing a blazer over your favorite graphic tee gives it just a bit of an edge, and makes you look like you put some effort into your outfit (but in reality, it's so simple!)

2. Layer it under a fun skirt
I love a t-shirt and fun, flowy skirt combination! The skirt automatically makes you look just a little more dressed up, when in reality, you really just threw it over your favorite soft tee. Pair with ballet flats for a daytime look or with heels for a girls night out.

3. Add a statement necklace
Go for glam by rocking a casual graphic t-shirt and your favorite jeans... and a statement necklace! This is another favorite of mine because your outfit is comfy and casual, but still on point.

What's your favorite way to wear a graphic t-shirt?

5 Shoe Trends to Try This Fall

I don't know about you but I'm tired of bringing out my combat boots and riding boots for fall. With the new season just arriving, it's time to try something new! There's so many styles and colors, you’re bound to find something new to love! From oxford shoes to slip-on sneakers, here are styles you need to try this fall!

Having seen them on various celebrities, chelsea boots are a MUST this season. You can pair them with a dress for a more formal look or dress them down with some skinny jeans and a sweater!

Oxford shoes are perfect if you’re trying to go for a preppy, classic look. Instead of going for the typical colors (black and brown), try ones with colored accents! They go perfectly with a button down shirt.

This season’s must-have item are knee-high boots. You can pair these boots with a skirt for that perfect feminine touch or a pair of dark skinny jeans and blouse!

I’m all about the slip-on sneakers this fall, especially patterned ones. Don't be afraid to mix patterns! Leopard patterned slip-ons can be paired with black skinny jeans and a striped shirt!

Wearing bright colored flats is a great way to make your outfit pop! Not only are they super cute with skinny jeans, but they're also really comfortable. Pair them with a t-shirt and blazer and your outfit is complete!

3 Pants Trends For Fall

Fall means it’s time to switch out your shorts for some jeans and leggings. I don’t know about you, but I’m tired of wearing either options this fall. Instead substitute these for harem pants, bell-bottoms, or joggers! Take a look at the options below:

1. Jogger Pants

Who said sweatpants are just for lounging around? Jogger pants are must-haves this fall! These updated jogging pants are super comfortable and are a great alternative to leggings. Whether you’re relaxing at home or going out, you can dress them up or down. Just pair them with a graphic t-shirt or cropped top.

2. Bell Bottoms

I’m happy to say that the 1970s trend is back - bell bottoms! Get away from those skinny jeans with this hippie chic and sophisticated style! Dress it up with a white button down or make it more casual with a cropped sweater or peasant blouse. You have to try this boho chic trend!

3. Harem Pants

Harem pants became very popular this summer but why not carry the trend into fall? They are super versatile - patterned ones are perfect to wear to class while solid black ones could be worn on a night on the town. Pair them with sneakers to get a sporty look or with booties to get a classic look.

DIY Kimono Cardigan (Made From a Scarf)

With the weather getting a little cooler, kimonos are the perfect light weight cover for the end of summer. Instead of going out to buy one, you can make one yourself!

All you need for this project is a large rectangular scarf, scissors, and a needle and thread. This DIY project cost me just $4 (plus tax) for floral scarf. I had scissors, needle, and thread already.

Step 1

Fold the scarf in half and lay it on a flat surface.

Step 2

Measure up from the bottom of the scarf about 10 inches on both sides. Mark each side with a piece of tape. Then measure about 8-10 inches inside of the original mark. mark that spot with tape as well. This will be the line you will need to sew. Sew along this line in a thread color that matches your scarf.

Step 3
Cut one side (important: only cut one side of the fold) of the folded scarf to the top. This will be the front opening of the cardigan. If you're having trouble with instructions, you can also watch a similar tutorial here.

Step 4

Try your new kimono cardigan on! Open up the cut and put your arms through the two "sleeves". If you want your sewed lines to be invisible, flip the kimono inside out.

Now, go rock back to college in style.

3 Basic Outfits to Wear to the Office

Whether you're interning this summer, working part time during the year, or starting your new post-grad job, you don't want to be the girl with the frumpy suit or the girl who tries to pass off a too-tight club dress as appropriate professional clothes. Luckily, you can easily get away with stylish, professional outfits on just a few well-fitted staples.

Here are three basic outfits to wear to the office, plus a list of our favorite basic office staples:

I love the simple yet stylish look of fit-and-flare dresses. Depending on how conservative your office is, you want to go for a dress that ends somewhere between your mid-thigh and your knee. A blazer goes well for a chic look while the A/C is running, and a leopard shoe can top off the neutral look with a bit of intrigue.

Peplum and pants are a dream pair when it comes to office wear. Make sure the peplum top is conservative enough: no see through lace, spaghetti straps, and cut-outs please! Pair the outfit with a neutral heel if the peplum top is bright.

I love how this outfit looks professional, but is actually very comfortable. With a slouchy wrap top and a jersey skirt, comfortable fabrics can go a long way. For days you can't be bothered to wear heels, nude flats will help elongate your legs while you still maintain the comfort of flats.

If you're just starting out, it's a good idea to have a few versatile pieces on hand. My favorite office wear staples include:

  • An office appropriate dress
  • A fitted blazer
  • A cardigan
  • A pair of trousers
  • A peplum top
  • A pair of neutral or black pumps
  • A boatneck top (or any top that doesn't show too much cleavage)
  • A pencil skirt
  • Nude flats

Although your office atmosphere will dictate how you can dress, generally you'll want to stay away from:

  • Dresses that are much too tight
  • Leggings as pants
  • Spaghetti strap tank tops
  • Transparent clothing
  • Mini-skirts (or dresses)
  • Too-high heels

What's your go-to office outfit? What are your office do's and don'ts?

Easy DIY: Tribal Half Print Shorts

I love the fun half-print shorts trend that has started this summer. But why shell out for a new pair when you can make yourself a pair from an old pair of shorts?

I personally wanted a more neutral look with a fun print. I had a pair of khaki shorts on hand, and turned them into my new favorite pair for summer.

For this DIY, you'll just need just a few supplies:

First, take a piece of cardboard and place it inside the shorts on the side you want to paint. This is to prevent the fabric paint from bleeding to the back of the shorts. I also recommend you place the entire project on a piece of newspaper so the paint doesn't stain your floor or table. The pair of shorts I used had couple of small stains on the front, so the fabric paint will cover it up perfectly.

Second, take your masking tape and create some patterns! I used the tape to create a triangle pattern and a straight line. I kept it rather simple, but you can get as creative as you want!

Third, take your fabric paint and paint brush and paint your masking tape stencil! A good method is to blot the paint with the brush instead of swiping it across.

Lastly, let your shorts dry for half an hour before taking the paint off. I also used the eraser on a wooden pencil to stamp some dots into my pair. Remember to follow the instructions that come with your fabric paint about drying and washing.

That's it! This DIY took just 15 minutes for me (not including the drying time), and now I have a new favorite pair of shorts this summer! Let us know in the comments if you try this too!

3 Outfits for Family Get-Togethers

Returning home to your family at the end of finals can be about as intimidating as the essay portion on that history final because it can seem like there are even more questions -- about your major, your classes, your friends and where you’re going with your life. Even if you can’t dodge the questions, it can only help to look like you have your life put together. Try these three outfits when you’re home for the holidays to look cute and collected.

Casual and Cozy

Take a casual approach to the day by starting with a neutral-colored, comfortable dress. Mix different shades of brown throughout your accessories to accomplish an overall warm look. Your family will appreciate the relaxed and innocent look of this outfit!

Funky and Festive

Throw on bold colors with gold jewelry and rock the day. Your family will love your energy and appreciate your love for the season! Try switching out flats with black riding boots for a warmer, more casual look.

Prim and Polished

Top | Pants | Shoes | Handbag

If you really want to look like you have your life together, try this prim and polished look. Dark skinny jeans and a simple blouse are perfect for the occasion. Add red accents complete the look. This is a no-fail way to look put together.

5 Reasons We Love Zooey Deschanel

Quirky. Weird. Awkward. Three traits once considered undesirable, until a blue-eyed brunette with bangs made America fall in love with her. During the course of falling in love, America fell in love with everything once considered abnormal. Zooey Deschanel’s peculiar and odd nature set her apart from other Hollywood starlets because she wasn’t the glam girl, the popular girl, the girl next door…she was just Zooey, the dorky girl from California. Which is why College Gloss loves Deschanel.

Her “weird” nature
Quirky, "adorkable," awkward…whichever way you put it, Deschanel is not your average starlet. Although there was a time she did not fully embraced it, she has now fully accepted who she is, and it makes her feel more relatable. It’s kind of like her character Jess said in the show New Girl “We’re weirdos. But that’s who we are. And that’s fine.”

Her old-fashioned vintage style
This is definitely a breath of fresh air in the Hollywood scene because Deschanel is not like one of those glammed-up Hollywood personas. On and off-screen Deschanel dons an old-fashioned sense of style and even lifestyle: “I love old music, old movies, screwball comedies, vintage clothes and basically I'm an old-fashioned gal.”

Her artistic soul
Everyone knows Deschanel is an actress, but do you know she is a singer and musician as well? She is part of a band named She & Him. Deschanel said: “I always thought I would be able to sing and act, but at a certain point, it became difficult for me to share the music part. So I was writing a ton of music, but not really doing anything with it. I didn’t really know exactly who to collaborate with…until I met Matt, and everything seemed to fall into place.” Their first album was released in March 2008. Deschanel plays the piano and ukulele for the band.

She encourages female empowerment
HelloGiggles, Deschanel’s website, is a site that was made partly to create a positive place online for girls. “I just felt it's important to teach young girls to be strong people, to not think, I can’t do this because I’m worried about what people will say. There are worse consequences, but online negativity stops people from being creative, part of which is having bad ideas as well as good ideas. When somebody says, ‘That idea’s stupid,’ you stop your flow of ideas. We can’t have the next generation be so afraid because they have been attacked.” The website is an environment for females to find some laughs and things to enjoy.

She’s a busy woman
Deschanel acts in a hit TV show, performs in a band and runs the website HelloGiggles for women…that in itself is a reason to love her. She’s an everyday woman whose work never ends. Isn’t that the way it is for the rest of us? This solidifies that Deschanel is just like us, and overall, that is what we love about her.

Welcome White for Fall

There’s nothing like the sip of a pumpkin spice latte to make you crave brisk weather, weather worthy of knits hanging to your knuckles. But as the new season sets in, we can’t help but also crave something new in our wardrobes.

Both on the street and on the runway a breath of fresh air for fall is found in a somewhat unconventional color scheme: white, and yes, it’s way after Labor Day. The trend of the LWD (little white dress) started a few months ago, and it isn’t slowing down. The key to making this neutral color scream fall instead of ethereal spring is two-fold: texture and pairing.

Texture is the most important element of pulling off this hot trend. Pre-Labor Day white favorites are smooth cottons and shears, while fall favors knits, wools, leather and anything close to fur. Texture gives white depth and makes it heavy enough to hold its own in colder weather. I can’t get my hands on a chunky, off-white cable-knit sweater or white leather moto jacket fast enough. Think heavy, white coats or a bag in soft, white leather with gold accents. The home pages of H&M and Anthropolgie couldn’t get it more right.

The other way to take white all year long is how you match it. While the texture is central, mixing with fall staples helps solidify white as a fall heavyweight. Layer your chunky knits over button downs with a flirty skirt and flats for class or a casual date night. Our recent obsession is inspired by the models backstage at fashion week. The sweatshirt has been made not only acceptable but chic with embellishments like jewels, embroidery, or my favorite, fur panels. Throw this over dark-washed jeans with a motorcycle boot to get that effortless “model-off-duty” look. Bright accessories make this look modern. Think red bags or statement necklaces. Any color pops against stark white. The only thing you can’t mix is all your whites at once; you’ll just end up looking like a snow bunny. Below, New Yorkers are caught wearing the trend on the streets.

By swapping around your pieces and mixing in touchable whites, you add a sophisticated yet playful twist on fall’s must-have looks. Anyone can fit this trend into their style by replacing signature pieces with a white, chunky version. White is unexpected once the leaves begin to change, but you’ll see it has a chic new presence well into the snowy months ahead.

5 Last Minute, DIY Halloween Costumes

Maybe you've been so busy you didn't have a chance to get a costume yet. Or perhaps you already went out this past weekend and you need a second costume for another round of Halloween festivities. Either way, check out these five last minute, DIY Halloween looks you can create from your own closet!

Minions
Be one of the lovable minions from Despicable Me! All you need is a yellow t-shirt, blue rompers (or overall shorts), and a pair of fake glasses. Pair with your favorite booties and you'll have made one of this year's most popular costumes.

Gatsby-Inspired
Go for the decadent, Gatsby-inspired look with a flapper dress and headband. Pair with gold heels and red lipstick, and you'll be the classiest girl at any Halloween party.
Orange is the New Black
Want to be a character from this year's hottest show? This costume will keep you comfortable all night. Go for orange scrubs, and keep the makeup minimal.

Miley 2013
Miley Cyrus may not be the person you look up to the most, but she definitely knows how to get people talking about her. Pair your favorite pair of white shorts with a white tank and smear on the bright red lipstick. Pouf up the middle section of your hair and tie it back in a bun, and everyone will recognize you as Miley circa 2013.

Wonder Woman
Superheroes are definitely still in this year, and no one says strong and sexy like Wonder Woman. Tuck a red tank top into your favorite polka dot shorts and add gold statement jewelry.

What were you for Halloween this year?

Class Attire: Science Lab Style

Dressing up for class is easy. Dressing cute for the lab after class ... not so easy. It may be tempting to throw on an old shirt, jeans and gym shoes rather than plan an outfit. But hey, who says you can’t look great while finding the Higgs boson particle? I certainly don’t.

Laboratory Dress Code
Every laboratory’s dress code varies slightly depending on the experiments. Below I listed the general lab attire in chemistry, physics and biology labs:

  • Wear close-toed shoes
  • Avoid dangling jewelry
  • Shorts, dresses and skirts must cover your knees, unless you’re wearing an apron or lab coat
  • Wear safety goggles while working
  • Optional: Wear a lab coat
  • Optional: Wear gloves

Shoes
Let’s break down the dress code, starting with close-toed shoes. Unless specified that you must wear gym shoes, your options are limitless. CG suggests that you avoid wedges and heels in the lab ... or your favorite Uggs in case there is a chemical spill.

Accessories
Obviously steer away from large hoop earrings, long necklaces and scarves. CG recommends a classic leather watch that won’t impede your work. Warning: some physics labs that work with lasers require you do not wear anything reflective, so avoid metallic jewelry, and opt for wood earrings.

Clothing
Jeans are a girl’s best friend in college. And in lab, they’re perfect. If you’re comfortable with a maxi dress or skirt, rock it within protocol.

Now being the most fashionable girl at lab is easy. Just make sure not to catch a sleeve in the Bunsen burner, and throw your hair back into a messy bun.
