Beauty Etiquette: The Seven Beauty Commandments

There are many products, tips and styles we love to rave about. As much as we love sharing our love for beauty, we also loathe when girls throw their beauty etiquette handbook out the window.

1. Avoid primping in public.

Don’t reveal your secrets: mystery is good! Nobody should know what makes your lips luscious or your lashes long and voluminous. “When out and about, please refrain from combing, brushing, blushing, pinching, poking, weaving, lining, coating, frosting, pushing, pulling, plumping, nipping and tucking. Bottom line: you look fabulous -- and if you don’t, it’s too late now. Leave yourselves alone,” says beauty expert Lisa Kogan from "O, The Oprah Magazine."

2. Never forget your table manners.

Do not place your mirror or lipstick on the dining table while you are out. Wait until after dinner to reapply in the ladies room. Leave your admirers guessing how you keep gorgeous 24/7.

3. Don’t play with your hair in public.

Don’t scratch, twirl or pick at your split ends! We know, we know ... everyone does this. We are all guilty, but the truth is, it makes you look childish.

4. Share selectively and practice good hygiene.

Yes, all girls share their clothes and makeup tips, but beauty is more than skin deep. Avoid sharing your mascara, eyeliner or lipstick. Products placed on the lashes or waterline are highly prone to bacteria. Fluids contain bacteria, which spreads diseases. Nobody wants to wake up with pink eye the next morning!

5. Treat others the way you like to be treated.

This goes back to commandment #4; if you know lending others your mascara could be potentially hazardous, don’t ask others to borrow their goodies. Also, be honest and friendly; if you happened to notice the girl next to you in line has lipstick on her teeth, go ahead and tell her.

6. Practice good salon etiquette.

Don’t be the girl who picks up her phone and shouts in the middle of her blow dry! Also, when going in for a new haircut or dye, have an image in hand. If you have an idea of what you want your hair to look like, share it with your stylist. This will avoid any mishaps. You want to feel good when you walk out of the salon, not have an identity crisis over a bad haircut.

7. Listen to the professionals.

Whether it’s a haircut or manicure, take the advice of your beauty stylists to get optimal results. For example, if you’re going in for a wax, don’t sabotage yourself! We know, we get it, it’s uncomfortable ... but if you’re going for a Brazilian, do not tidy up! “No matter how unkempt you feel, don't trim before a wax -- the aesthetician will do it if needed,” says Lura Jones of the Stark Waxing Studio at Sally Hershberger Face Place in Marie Claire. “For best results, your hair must be one-quarter-inch long, so don't shave the area within three weeks of your appointment. Don’t be shy.”

We firmly believe that every girl is entitled to her secrets, and her beauty ritual should be one of them. Be confident in that you did a good job before you left the house. Don’t throw away your manners for a lipstick!
