Designer Diaries: Meet Paidemoyo Chideya of DeMoyo

Fashion designer Paidemoyo Chideya has been designing since she was eight years old, but it wasn’t until she turned 19 and went to art school in Paris that she realized her dreams of becoming a full-fledged fashion designer. Born in Zimbabwe and raised in various fashion capitals across Europe, Chideya’s rich cultural background has proven to offer a never-ending palette of inspiration when it comes to her clothing line DeMoyo.

DeMoyo features clothing that is classic, sophisticated and perfect for everything from a day on campus to a date with your crush! How does the designer sum up the vibe of her stitches? “A mixture of sheer fabrics, in soft gradients, paired with bold stripes in various forms. Next, we have a new take on the modern dress shirt, with asymmetrical folds, on a faintly striped canvas. Of course incorporating DeMoyo’s signature hand-crocheted designs, this season [I] merged crochet with softer fabrics and full A-line skirts [to] further bring about ... an effortless weight and versatility.” Sounds like a pretty suave vibe to CG!

One of the things that makes Paidemoyo’s clothing so great is its versatility ... these really are garments that can be worn with anything for any occasion, and even Pai says “anyone from Avril Lavigne to Beyoncé” could rock her garments!

Paidemoyo Chideya’s Spring/Summer 2013 collection debuted at the World MasterCard Fashion Week in Toronto and featured trendy, fashion-forward and sophisticated pieces perfect for any college girl. This collection was all about “deriving inspiration from Spiral grace. This collection brings forth the constantly evolutionary nature of the spiral which represents the never-ending process of learning and growing, and the coming into being, for Spring 2013” notes Pai on her most recent work.

Paidemoyo Chideya is a wonderful up-and-coming fashion designer whose clothing line contains beautiful pieces that are a must-have for any girl’s wardrobe. Who are your favorite designers?
PC: Erté.

What advice do you have for aspiring fashion designers?
PC: Fashion is known as the most difficult industry in the world to be successful in. This is a simple truth, but what I would say if you want it, [is that] you have to be willing to put in the work, and never give up.

When did you first start to develop your sense of style?
PC: I started very early. Before my formative years.

Who or what inspires your designs?
PC: I look to life to inspire me; so anything from a matchstick to a butterfly -- the only catch is that it has to have meaning for me to make it a collection.

Designing with the environment in mind is very important to you. How do you ensure your designs are earth conscious?
PC: To have eco consciousness for me does not only entails sustaining ecosystems, it’s also about being conscious about the sustainable development of the garments as well. It is about taking care of how you create a garment through the earth. For me, this means I pay attention to the entire process from A-Z; from where the fabrics come from, how they are made, and who makes the garment, the timeline, the finishing and the production of the goods. As my brand develops, I would [like to] create the fabrics myself.

What was the best advice you were given for your career?
PC: “Pick something you excel at, and stick to it.”

What is your mantra when it comes to designing?
Remember thee, remember thee (remember who you are).
