Beauty & the Beach: CG's Top 3 Beach Beauty Products

There is nothing better than splashing around on the beach with your best friends during the summer, but a lot of the time ... well, beach visits aren’t easy breezy for college girls! Let’s face it, girls have to manage the pressure of having the perfect bikini body, a dazzling tan, stylish swimwear and the list goes on. So one thing you shouldn’t have to worry about for a day at the beach is your makeup! Keep reading for three high-end beach products that will have your face shining in the summer sun...

One of the most important features a girl can accentuate in the summer is her eyelashes! Long, thick, velvety lashes add an instant glam factor to a beach ensemble and are sure to make your eyes sparkle. When picking mascara for a day at the beach, think before you buy! Beach day mascara has to be waterproof or it will run as soon as you hit the waves (eek!). Lancome L’Extreme Waterproof Mascara may be pretty pricey ($30+), but it is worth every penny. This mascara lengthens your lashes with no smudging and no smearing, which means nothing can keep you from swimming in the sea!

Any girl would agree that the thought of piling on skincare products for a swelteirng day in the sun is downright gross! No girl wants to apply layers of concealer, bronzer, sunscreen, moisturizer, etc. for a beach day, so why should you? Smashbox’s Camera Ready BB Cream ($39) does it all! This fabulous beauty product is topping every college girl’s wishlist with its SPF 35 protection and ability to “moisturize, prime, perfect, protect and control oil in a single step!” This BB cream does it all and more and is one beach-ready beauty product you shouldn’t mind splurging on.

No girl is ready for the beach without a rosy red pout. To achieve beautiful bee stung lips, without a question, CG loves Benefit’s SPF 15 Tinted Lip Balm! This $20 lip tint not only protects your lips, but it also leaves them colored and shiny. (Plus we also love the adorable Benefit jar that the lip balm comes in! It is too cute to resist.)

Now you can make your beach day so much more beautiful with these three fancy beauty products that every girl is lusting for! While these products may have a larger price tag, they also come with endless beauty opportunities and the high-end quality that every girl wants in her makeup.

Getting To Know Kristina…

What do you like to do in your spare time?
KM: I like to spend time with my family and friends. I also love hitting up Karaoke bars!

What is one thing your fans don’t know about you?
KM: Even though you can’t see it through my music….I am extremely silly!

Did you always want to become a singer?
KM: Absolutely! There was never a point in my life when I wanted to be a doctor or a lawyer or a nurse, I always wanted to be a singer.

What artists do you feel you can relate to?
KM: Everything I write and sing about is custom made for me. Even though I am singing pop music, I am also very unique. My music does not sound like Katy Perry or Rihanna. I like to think of myself as a very different person, and I want to show that in my music.

What sets you apart from other pop artists?
KM: My style. Nothing sounds like my music….it is what makes my music so powerful.

Music

How long have you been into music?
KM: Rumor has it I used to hum on key all the time when I was a baby before I could even talk! The big moment in my life when I knew was when I was four and I saw the "Bodyguard" movie, and I asked my parents for the Whitney Houston album. I was constantly singing along to the crazy notes, and my interest just kept growing and growing from there!

Who are some of your biggest musical inspirations?
KM: It is melting pot of people, but I would say Christina Aguilera, Ella Fitzgerald, Dean Martin, and also Celine Dion and Whitney Houston.

What artists do you want to collaborate with in the future?
KM: Definitely Bruno Mars! I think him and I would sound amazing together…..we would serenade the world!

What is the best part of being in the music industry?
KM: Doing what I love! I know I have a lot more to do and experience in life, but being in the music industry is really just one of the best things that has happened to me. This has been the journey of a lifetime and I have just been trying to enjoy all of it.

Debut Album- "Tell The World"

What was it like putting together your first album?
KM: It was really exciting. My manager Vito Luprano found Celine Dion 20-something years ago and he worked with her. So the people that I got to work with were all amazing, talented people who have worked and written with Britney, Celine, Madonna... I got to develop my writing and vocal skills in the studio. As an artist it is exciting to work on an album and making this one was a lot of fun. At the end of the day, this album is 100% Kristina Maria and I want it to be relatable. I have broken up with guys, I’ve had my heart broken, I’ve felt angry, I’ve felt happy, and I want all of that to show in this album. I’ve traveled to Sweden, Miami, New York, Montreal, so I think this album has European feel, an American feel and a Canadian feel, which is really great!

What did you want the overall message or vibe of the album to be?
KM: I wanted it to be something really fun that people can jam out to while still finding out who I am because again this is 100% Kristina Maria, and I just want them to love this album.

What is your favorite song from the album?
KM: I love them all equally….it is my baby….it is my creation. Sometimes I prefer one to another, but it really depends on my mood! Today I woke up and loved the song “We Belong Together," but tomorrow who knows how I going to feel!

One of the songs on the album is titled "I Wanna Tell The World." Why did you name the album after this song?
KM: I feel like the title is really in your face. I want to prepare the world for Kristina Maria! It is really exciting to be sharing my thoughts and music with everyone, and I want everyone to know I have arrived!

What was it like the first time you heard your music on the radio?
KM: It was really fun. At first I did not think it was real. I thought it was my CD player because I was in the car. I went to press eject and then I realized it was not my CD player, it was the radio! There was this overwhelming sense of pride because when you think about how hard everyone worked to get this song out there, and the lyrics are playing it just makes you really, really proud. It is just amazing to be able to share your songs with people.

Songwriting

What was it like writing songs for “Tell The World?"
KM: It was really exciting. I have always been a writer, and I have always loved writing. It was great writing with the veterans who have been in the industry for years. I learned so much, and I was taking advantage of every single second that I was in the studio with them. I wanted to learn as much as I possibly could!

What was one of the biggest things you learned about song writing while working on the music for the album?
KM: Just don’t force it! Be yourself and be really creative. Don’t be scared. Go for it!

What are your main inspirations when songwriting?
KM: It depends how I felt in the moment when I was writing the song. If I had my heart broken, I would write about that, or if I was feeling happy, I would write about that. I really just wanted my music to be relateable.

Which one of the songs was the most fun to write?
KM: They were all so fun to write! I have really amazing memories with each one of them, but with all the writers I had a new experience, which was what made the writing process even better. There was this one writer who I really clicked with and we became really good friends. He became my mentor and with every song I wrote with him you can almost hear the sweat dripping off my forehead. We wrote about four songs together, and those were the songs that were the most fun because I was having so much fun and learning so much at the same time!

Live Shows

What is it like before you go on stage for a performance?
KM: In my opinion if you are not nervous before a show, you shouldn’t be performing. It is 100% normal to be nervous, and I am always so nervous before a show. It is exciting to be nervous before you go on stage….it means you are passionate about giving a good performance.

What is your pre-show ritual?
KM: I do voice work to warm up my vocal chords.

Do you have a lucky charm you take with you on stage to perform?
KM: Yes, I got one really recently! My friend gave me a little furry Chewbacca that I take with me on stage. Then also my manager, my assistant and I just do a little “go team” cheer!

What is the overall vibe or mood of your performances?
KM: It depends on the song I am signing. Some of my more playful songs like “Let’s Play” are more bubbly and exciting, but if it is a song like “Our Song Comes On," it is a little more to the heart and emotional because memories are running through my head.

Fans

You have thousands of supporters who love you and your music. What does that feel like?
KM: It is an incredible feeling and so surreal. It is really cool that my fans are so supportive. The people keep me going. I can’t even describe it to you because it is all so new to me, and I love it.

What was the moment like when you realized you have fans?
KM: It is really hard to believe….it is so surreal, and I am just trying to live in the moment!

Musical Growth & Next Steps

How have you grown as an artist during the process of releasing this album?
KM: I developed my writing and vocal skills. I was always learning and growing every single day, but I am still growing and I still have a lot to learn.

What was the best advice you were given while working on the album?
KM: My manager always tells me “just be yourself," and he couldn’t be more right.

Where do you want your music career to be in a few years?
KM: All over the world! I want to have fun with my music, be happy and have good health!

What do you want to achieve in 2012 as a performer?
KM: It is really cool that Canada is playing my music on the radios, and we have also launched "Co-Pilot," the French version, in Europe, in France and Belgium. I will be heading up to Europe, and I will be going on to America from there.

What should fans look out for from you in the future?
KM: Good music…. new singles and more performances. I just hope that everyone keeps an eye out and an ear out because I will be growing and working, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds!

Fashion Star's Caprice Willard On Breaking Into the Fashion Business

Season 1 of NBC’s Fashion Star may be coming to a close, but we are already counting down the days until season 2 starts! The first season of Fashion Star was a massive hit as unknown designers launched their careers and sold their designs in Macy’s, Saks Fifth Avenue and H&M. One of our favorite buyers on Fashion Star is Caprice Willard! Over the course of the show Caprice offered the designers helpful advice and insightful tips on what it would take to become the ultimate fashion star!

Caprice loved the time she spent on NBC’s Fashion Star and really enjoyed watching the designers grow. While she admits that almost all of the designs on the show were incredible, there were a few designers that she had her eye on. However, even knowing which designers understood the Macy’s brand did not make every decision on the show an easy one; “there were a lot of things that I saw every week that could have worked in some of our stores, so almost every designer was tapping into some portion of our customer base.” The winner of Fashion Star will be revealed tonight, Tuesday May 15 at 10/9 Central p.m. on NBC, so tune in to find out who wins it all! As for right now? Keep reading for CG’s all-new interview with Caprice Willard of Macy’s! You’ll find helpful hints from Caprice on how to break into the business, details on her favorite purchases from the show and her favorite Fashion Star memories

Did you always want a career in fashion?
CW: Actually, no! I went to college, and I majored in English pretty much because I wanted to be a teacher. It just so happened that while I was in college I worked in retail and found I had an interest in that. When it was time to graduate I was planning to become a teacher, but my mother (who was a teacher) advised me to explore retail and business-related careers because she could see I had an interest in it. I visited a career center and found out that Macy’s was interviewing for an executive training program that sounded very interesting. They basically brought you in and through the week you would be shadowing the buyer, and on the fifth day you would be in a classroom setting with other trainees learning the job. I thought it was fantastic because I would be leaving college, but not leaving a classroom setting. It was that 10-week bridge program that gave me hands on experience to ultimately learn the job! Once I took the job I realized this whole new fashion-related world that I had never considered. I had never thought about how the clothes get here, or who makes the decisions, or any of the fashion retail background, and so once I became a buyer I had the opportunity to explore that, which was really interesting!

What advice do you have for young people who want to be a part of the fashion industry?
CW: The number one thing I wish I had done was internships. Many retailers and designers have wonderful internships that young people have access to, especially in college. I wish I had taken advantage of that opportunity because an internship gives people a chance see if something is a good fit before they devote their entire life to it, and it is a great way to build contacts. In the fashion world having relationships is really important if you want to move forward!

What made you want to be a part of NBC’s Fashion Star?
CW: I was excited to become a part of Fashion Star because I thought it was really great that a huge company like Macy’s would be open to trying something new and fresh and different. It was a way to catch customers in a way that has never been done before, and I wanted to be part of that new approach to driving business. I also was excited about becoming part of it because I do think there are a lot of people who have never thought of buying as a career, or have never thought of fashion as a viable option for them (whether on the design side, the production side, the buying side, etc.), and I was very excited about being able to shed a light on what I do and the industry I work in. I wanted to pull the curtain back and educate people on the possibilities!

Which designers on the show did you feel had a particularly good understanding of Macy’s? CW: That’s a really good question. I would say initially I felt like Nikki [Poulos] had a very good understanding of a portion of our customers. Over the last few episodes Ronnie [Escalante] has also come on very strong as a designer who is really starting to get it. From a men’s wear standpoint Nzimiro [Oputa] is also incredible. They have all come so far from the first day and I have felt so good about how all of them have taken my feedback and incorporated that into their design aesthetic.

What was the hardest part about buying for Macy’s on the show?
CW: For me it was hard to buy for Macy’s on the show because we have so many different markets and demographics, so I really had to think about which customers I was going to buy what for. It made it difficult because there were a lot of things that I saw every week that could have worked in some of our stores, so almost every designer was tapping into some portion of our customer base. I tried to target designs that I felt had the most universal feel and could attract the majority of our customers.

What has been one of your best buys on the show?
CW: Every single week it has been more and more fantastic as far as the performance. The customers have responded at a much greater level then we intended and sales have exceeded expectations! The menswear that we have offered from Nzimiro has really been a fresh approach and the customers have really gravitated to that. All of Ronnie’s dresses have done phenomenally well and Luciana [Scarabello]’s jackets were also a stellar item! It comes down to what is fashion-forward and appropriate for spring.

What was your best Fashion Star memory?
CW: My best memory would be the time that I had to spend with the designers helping them to understand what their opportunities were. I really enjoyed giving them feedback and I felt very good about the time I spent with them. I feel the best about the fact that I participated in someones dream coming true. Everyone who sold something on that shows launched their career regardless of whether they ultimately win Fashion Star or not. It is great to think that I had some small participation in helping them get closer to realizing their dream. It is a very fulfilling feeling because it is not every day you get to make a difference in someones life!

Don’t forget to tune in to see who wins!
