CG's Summer Guide to Clear Skin

The sun, the sand, the surf... the unwanted summer souvenirs: blemishes. When humidity spikes, breakouts do, too! Don’t get caught in the heatwave defenseless. Fight back with these five summer must-haves.
FACE WASH
Master a simple skincare routine to manage breakouts. If you haven’t made the switch now to a more aggressive face wash than usual, run now! Our favorite pick for clear skin is Neutrogena Oil-Free Face Wash ($7.49, neutrogena.com).

MOISTURIZER
For moisturizer, pick a lightweight formula to avoid clogged pores or side effects from mixing active ingredients like retinol and benzoyl peroxide, which can potentially further irritate the skin. Our pro tip: apply moisturizing products during the day and drying products at night, like acne-fighting products. Our favorite lightweight moisturizer for clear skin is DDF Ultra Lite Oil-Free Moisturizing Dew ($42, ddfskincare.com). We know, we know -- it’s on the expensive side, but it will never leave you with a greasy complexion.

BIKINI/BACNE CONSCIOUS
“Fight back by using only noncomedogenic [does not clog pores] sunscreens, changing out of sweaty clothes right away (as they can trap bacteria) and switching out your regular body wash for one with two percent salicylic acid, like Neutrogena Body Clear Body Wash Pink Grapefruit” ($7.49, neutrogena.com) says Elle. “When you're dry, apply a two percent salicylic acid gel, but steer clear of benzoyl peroxide because it can bleach clothes.”

SUNSCREEN
Don’t forget that sunscreen isn’t “one size fits all.” If you worry about breakouts, skim the ingredient list. Two of the ingredients to avoid are Helioplex and zinc oxide. Most sunscreens are oil-based, which trigger breakouts. Opt for sunscreen that is water-based. Our favorite water-based sunscreen is La Roche-Posay Anthelios 60 Melt-In Sunscreen Milk ($35.99, laroche-posay.us).

OVERNIGHT/EXTRA CARE
The perfect skincare routine would be a loss without a mask! Although we have loads of favorites in skincare, we have been loyal to Neutrogena Clear Pore Cleanser/Mask ($6.99, neutrogena.com) since our teen days!

Overall, be gentle! Don’t over-exfoliate; don’t pick your zits; remove makeup at nighttime, and wash your face twice a day. If frequent breakouts become a problem, visit your dermatologist, and they will make you a customized a skincare regimen.

  1. This is great! I love that pink grapefruit body wash, its really the only thing I've found that works for my skin!
My skin problems really get bad when the temperature cools off from summer into fall, I really enjoy these product roundups and I'd love to see Ivanna Coello write something about cold weather skincare.

  3. DDf is my go to moisturizer. Although pricey, I found it at TJ Maxx for a mere $11 (shop cheap don't look cheap yay!) My skin has never been happier!
