“People have a hard time making me dress up to look like a classy gal,” Judy Holliday, American actress in the 40s and 50s, once said. Holliday needed a blazer.
Blazers are a great look for any classy gal, without requiring too much effort. There’s always an excuse to wear a blazer, whether it’s to an interview, dinner with the boyfriend, class or a formal night out. It’s as easy to dress a blazer up as it is to dress it down because it is a staple that stands out on its own.
Beyond the timeless black blazer, recent fashion trends have made the blazer one of the most versatile pieces in any closet. Blazers are available in virtually every color and fit, making it an attractive choice for girls with all kinds of style sense.
One of the most unique ways to wear a blazer is in a bright print with a complementing pattern, like red with leopard or baby pink with a seersucker pinstripe oxford. Blazers can be one of an outfit’s most personalized aspects, giving off any impression you’d like: preppy, grunge, hipster or everything in between. Although this might not be appropriate for an interview, it’s definitely a fun look for a night out on the town when paired with jeans and heels or a mini-skirt with platforms.
In addition to expressing your style, blazers are as functional as a sweatshirt would be and quite useful when sweats aren’t appropriate. When placed over an evening dress or pleated skirt, a blazer is sure to keep you warm in an air conditioned banquet hall.
For a biker-chic, edgy look, ripped white jeans or bleached shorts with studded boots and a graphic tee would look great under a black blazer.
During any season of the year, blazers are a classy and traditional choice when the cardigan gets stale. In winter, pair it with a chunky scarf and boots, and in the spring, wear it with bright colored capris and flats.
Blazers are an affordable fundamental to any closet, so be sure to pick one up (okay, maybe two or three...) and get creative!
