Au La La: CG's Guide to Natural Makeup

When we think of spring, we automatically begin to think about the bright eye-catching colors that come along with it, but not all that glitters is gold. That is to say just because something is bright doesn’t mean it’s the best choice, and this goes for your makeup. And don’t worry, I know it’s going to be hard to ignore those bright pink lipsticks and eye-catching electric eye shadows that are sure to be popping up on a makeup counter nearest you, but resist! Surely you’ve heard the saying “a little goes a long way,” well why not take it into consideration this spring?

A lot of celebrities are falling under the trend of naturally toned makeup and are getting a lot of compliments for it, so why can’t you? It's time to put away the bright blues and pinks and bust out those au naturel colors you never thought you'd use! Here are some tricks of the trade and some great beauty products that will have you greeting the rest of your days with a fresh face!

Eye-Catching Natural Makeups:

As a girl I know exactly how hard it is to find the perfect color to match your skin tone. It’s especially difficult when you’re going for something more lively; but when going the natural route, it’s virtually hassle free.

The key when using eye makeup is to bring out your eyes; this is where we usually play with colors. Most makeup artists or even makeup fanatics have a rule of thumb when it comes to picking out colors for different eye colors. To bring out green eyes, go for more browns and coppers; for blue, choose peaches and bronze; for brown eyes, use deep shades such as plums and violet. As you can see, your eye color along with skin tone determines the eye shadow, but when going au naturel everyone can benefit from using coppers and browns ranging from medium to dark.

Whenever I’m going for the au natural look, I love to emulate the smoky eye look. If you’re not too familiar with this look, it is the application of eye makeup where the darkest color is closest to your lash line and is blended upwards to a lighter color. To achieve this look, always apply your lightest color first, following up with your medium and then dark.

Here are some au natural smoky eye looks:

When picking a brand of eyeshadow, go for one that you’re most familiar with; if you like to experiment, try out MAC Amber Lights, Bobbi Brown Sable or Revlon Beyond Natural Cream to Powder Eye Shadow.

Less Color, More Luscious Lips:

Even if you’re not a fan of Kim K., you have to admit that she knows how to wear a nude lip, giving her an effortless and beautiful look. But hey, this look isn’t just for celebrities! Even the average Jane can pull this look off! All you need is the right lip color. Unlike eye shadow, not everyone can pull off the same color, so you’ll need to experiment to see what’s right for you.

Be careful not to choose a lipstick that will make you look washed out. If you find that nude lipstick just doesn’t have the kick that your fire engine red did, try adding a little gloss to give some extra life to your lips.

For great nude lipstick colors affordable to the college girl, try out these three great lip choices: Maybelline Mineral Lipstick, CoverGirl Continuous Color Lipstick and L’Oreal Colour Riche Lipstick.

The Power of Powder:

Most girls I know constantly wear foundation and never seem to give their pores time to breathe, so here is a beauty tip 101: No matter how healthy and light your foundation claims to be, you are still clogging your facial pores when you’re constantly applying it. Clogged pores can lead to irritability and breakouts.

Have you ever had down time where you didn’t have to wear your foundation? Felt nice, didn’t it? So here’s a suggestion, continue to do that, and if you’re worried about looking not together or haggard without your precious foundation, but want to keep the natural vibe simply go for powder.

With the advancement in cosmetics there are now great powders out there from barely-there covers to mineral makeups and shimmering translucent powders. Just like with adding a little lip gloss to your nude lip color, shimmery powders are a great way to add a little sparkle to the rest of your face; however, a matte finish will work just as well to bring out your natural glow. If you have oily skin, chances are foundation isn’t going to help the problem; instead powder does wonders to get rid of the unwanted shine while letting your pores breathe.

If you want to give powder a shot, try out Clinique Blended Face Powder, Revlon Be Dazzling Shimmer Powder or Maybelline New York Mineral Powder.

Let your natural beauty shine this spring!
