CG's Makeup Guide for a Girl's Night Out

Ever found the perfect party outfit just to be stumped by what makeup look to try? Well, fear not. Here is the College Gloss guide to makeup for a night out. Whether you’re going for subtle and understated or bold and edgy, these foolproof steps will help you to look and feel your best!

#1: Get some inspiration
The outfit you choose is just as important as the makeup on your face, so do your research and begin by scouring the internet for the perfect inspiration. By finding something inspiring and different you can break away from that go-to look you always wear and try something new! Depending on where you’re going, your makeup can range from simple and sultry to bold and daring. Just remember that it’s always good to change it up every now and then and have fun with it!

Websites like Pinterest and Glamour are great places to find makeup inspiration.

#2: Prime and polish
Begin with a clean face by washing with your favorite cleanser and finishing with a moisturizer. Next, apply a primer to the eyes and face. Smashbox’s Photo Finish Foundation Primer, $17, smoothes and protects the skin and comes in different colors to correct any discoloration. For the eyes, Urban Decay’s Eyeshadow Primer Potion, $20, works like magic to ensure that your shadow stays on all night. Polish the look by gently buffing your foundation onto the face until you get your desired coverage.

#3: It’s all about the eyes...
Once you have on your base, reach for your eye shadows. With your inspiration in mind get together your basic colors. It’s best to choose three shades: a nude for the base coat, a dark brown or black for definition and a pop of color for some fun.

Below are three different looks that can be used with your color of choice.

Classic With A Twist: The first look is a simple smokey eye with a little hint of color on the bottom lash line. It has just the right amount of definition with a soft hint of color that can really bring out your eyes. It’s subtle enough that it can be worn out on a date or even to a house party. All you need to do is apply a matte base coat then work your dark shadow into the crease to create the smokey effect. Line the bottom lash line with your color of choice and you’re done!

Fun and Flirty: The second look is a little more intense and combines a light, smokey eye with fun colors and glitter. This look is great for a night out with the girls because you can really play with it. Try applying a nude shimmer across the lid then adding a matte brown shadow to the crease and finishing with a colorful metallic along the upper and lower lash line.

Daring and Dramatic: The last look is very bold and utilizes dark colors. Try to create a foiled effect on the eye by wetting your brush and sweeping a metallic color over the lid. This will give intense pigmentation to your colors and make your eyes pop. Save this look for a big night out on the town and you’ll be sure to turn heads.

#4: Perfect the Pout
No matter what look you choose a nude lip is a great way to go. Look for a lipstick or lip gloss that’s a shade or two darker than your own lip color. That way it will look natural without being overwhelming or competing with your bold eye.

#5: Lock and Load
Finish off the look by misting your face with a setting spray. Try MAC's Fix+, $10, or Urban Decay’s All Nighter Long-Lasting Setting Spray, $12. This way your makeup masterpiece will be sure to stay on all night!

Don’t forget to bring your lip gloss and a powder compact with you in your purse for any touch-ups you might need throughout the night. Good luck trying your going out looks, and don’t forget to have fun with it!
