He's Reading Your Girly Magazines

Standing in line at the grocery store, or passing a vendor on the street, girls may peruse the magazine stack and grab a last minute purchase of Cosmopolitan Magazine. But when you bring it home to read a few days later you can’t find it. Surprise, surprise, it’s in the bathroom attached to your boyfriend’s hands. That’s right, boys read Cosmo just as much as you do. I didn’t believe it myself, until I started to ask around and a lot of guys will admit they read Cosmo too.

Why do they do it? Even though some men like to deflect and say they are only reading it to look at the pictures of hot girls on the cover and the few spreads inside, Cosmo is known as the “Women’s Bible” to the social world. Every trick, every rule, and every secret is inscribed onto the pages and men are curious to know what makes women tick. Catchy and eye-awakening articles that explain the newest fashion trends to the perfect way to seduce your man in bed, Cosmo has it all.

Hampton University senior Cedric Rainey admits he reads Cosmo, or the “Women’s Playbook,” whenever he can get his hands on one. It’s actually a cheat sheet for guys. Girly magazines give them the ins and outs of the female mind. Guys want to know what to say and what not to say, what women like in bed, what women expect from their man, as well as gift ideas.

“You gotta read the women’s playbook,” Rainey said. “I used to learn the smallest and simplest things. I used to read bad dating stories and I learned the do’s and don’ts of dating.”

Some men read it specifically for the sex tips. We have all seen the scandalous headlines on the front cover inviting you to a new world of kinky sex for you and your man.

Dominique Byse, also a senior at Hampton University, said “It’s just good sex.”

He reads Cosmo to stay up to date on the latest trends and new ways to please the leading lady in his life.

“It’s not that I don’t already know how, but I can always learn something new,” Byse said.

Cosmo even hires men to get the male perspective for its female readers. With the growing population of male readers, Cosmo introduced its own app for iPhone users in 2011 called CFG, Cosmo For Guys.

If your man suddenly starts giving compliments on your style, he may be reading Cosmo. If your boyfriend suddenly learns new tricks in the sheets, he could be reading Cosmo. If your boy toy suddenly wants to go out on amazing dates, he may be reading Cosmo. So don’t be surprised if you catch your man taking a peek, he’s just trying to make you happy and get to know you better.

"Wrap It Up" This Holiday Season

It’s officially the holiday season and gift giving is a major component of that. However, be careful of the gifts that you give this season. And yes, I mean that in a sexually suggestive way. Fall and winter or, “cuffing season,” as we like to call it at Hampton University, is the time for couples to cuddle up and spend time with each other. Have caution, there is nothing wrong with spending time with your boy in an extra romantic way, but just like his Christmas present, make sure you wrap it up!

It doesn’t matter if the two of you are committed and faithful to each other, use condoms! It doesn’t matter if you are on birth control, use condoms! And it doesn’t matter if it “feels better without it,” use condoms! Birth control is not the same thing as a condom; you can still catch a disease. Whatever excuses your boyfriend has to go without a condom, I can give you ten reasons to reject it. If the guy is really pressing the issue, then you probably shouldn’t be having sex with him anyway. Just like a woman, a man should know the importance of using condoms and want to protect himself.

Rodale reported that 53% of young adults in the United States are having unprotected sex. Having unprotected sex makes you more likely to succumb to sexually transmitted diseases like Chlamydia, Herpes, Gonorrhea, Trichomoniasis and AIDS. Is going without a condom worth the risk? I think not. If you are responsible enough to have sex, be responsible enough to know the risks that you are taking and how to prevent them.

Sex is not something that should be taken half-heartedly; it’s a serious matter. When you feel that you are ready, hopefully you and your guy discuss having sex before it happens. But if you haven’t talked, to prevent a, “it was spur of the moment and neither of us had one,” incident, I suggest that you keep some of your own. There are many different kinds of condoms, but any kind is better than none. Female condoms, flavored condoms, regular condoms – just pick one and use it!

While giving gifts this holiday season, remember to put your health first and wrap up the gifts! Don’t waste a few moments of pleasure for a lifetime of unhappiness because you were too embarrassed or scared to tell your guy to wrap it up. If you need help on how to approach your guy about wearing one, or if you have questions in general, Avert has all the information you need. Just remember, use caution when gift giving this holiday season!

Ask Kayla: How to Let Your Crush Know You Like Him

Hi! I desperately need your advice!

I have a huge crush on this guy I saw at school last year. After the school year ended, I never saw him again. We used to see each other every day and he used to notice me too. Once in my chemistry class he sat with me. Whenever I used to pass by he would smile.

From that time after I couldn't stop thinking about him. He was like this major, major crush. I kept looking for him online but I could not find him. Now one year has passed and I found him on Facebook. I was sooo glad that I finally found him. Now, I am unsure if I should add him as a friend. I don't want to look all desperate and like I want to get to him. I'm also scared that if I add him, he’ll reject my request. Please help!

Hi Crushing,

Girl. You are obsessing. And no less, over a guy whom you haven’t seen since last year in chemistry class! The prime time to say something would have been during class, when you could have actually said something. Like, in person. Which I’m not sure you’ve ever even done? Stop freaking out about a guy you like on the Internet and start freaking out about a guy you like in person!

Friend him on Facebook, stalk him on Twitter, send him a smoke signal through the night sky – the truth is, it doesn’t matter much what you do now. It’s all good and fun to have a crush but the reason a crush usually does not become more is because you don’t know anything about him. Don’t take a crush on someone who is essentially stranger too seriously. It’s easy to adore someone from afar who seems brilliant and romantic and funny and wonderful, but until you actually have a conversation with him, you might as well be writing to me about your crush on Harry Potter (what? I’m not the only one?).

This guy is not the first – or the last – guy to be interested in you. Hopefully, the next one will even take the initiative to get to know you. Or you’ll do the same. And then, Miss Crushing, that’s when the real chemistry begins.

Yours truly,

Kayla

Guy Talk: Good Morning Texts and Maintaining Your Relationship

There is no denying it, every girl enjoys the sweet good morning and good night text from her special guy. A girl will appreciate knowing that she is the first person he thinks about in the morning and the last person he thinks about before he goes to sleep at night.

But is the good morning text necessary? Of course not. Just because a guy does not text his female counterpart every morning or every evening does not mean that he is not thinking of her. Life is busy and I want to personally congratulate every couple that has time to talk or spend time with each other everyday.

There is however, a clause to the good morning text. If a man decides to text his girl every morning, he can not abruptly stop without consequences. Once a girl has gotten used to her charming text when she opens her eyes in the moring, her man must keep them coming. A day or two off is fine, but longer than that and a man should start to notice that his sweet lady may not be as sweet as usual. Girls like consistency!

Let's be honest, the good morning text will become predictible. Just like any other long-term reationship it takes work to keep things fresh and new. I remember at one point my guy would send the absolute mushiest good morning texts he could think of to make me laugh. I think my favorite was "good morning chipmunk cheeks." It doesn't matter how you do it, she will always appreciate it.

Ladies, as much as you enjoy your loveable messages in the morings, remember not to be rude. If your man was kind enough to say that he was thinking of you when he woke up, you could respond in the same way. It is even thoughtful for you to send him the good morning text. Chilvary is not dead on your part either! Men appreciate being thought about just as much as women do.

Just remember that even though the two of you may be apart there are still ways that you can connect to say you are thinking of each other. With school and jobs life becomes hectic very quickly. Taking the time to send a caring good morning or good night text will always score major points in the relationship.

Should You Commit Dormcest?

In the olden days, any kind of hooking up in the family tree or anything close usually led to your head being, well, chopped off. Or as the Queen of Hearts from Alice in Wonderland would say, “Off with her head!” But now, in campuses all over the world, ‘dormcest’ as some like to call it, leads straight to total and complete awkwardness—most of the time.

So, what is dormcest exactly? The word screams ew, but really, it’s not as bad as you think. Dormcest is when you partake in hooking up, or dating someone that lives in your dorm. But the problem here is simply, what if things end badly? Brace yourself for awkward run-ins in the hall, possibly dirty glances, and lots of gossip. Makes you think twice, huh? But, it doesn’t always end that way, there are pros and cons to hooking up with the hot guy down the hall.

Here are some of the Do’s and Don’ts of dormcest that you should consider:

Do make some guidelines before hand:
If you meet a really cute guy that you could see yourself dating or just hooking up with, then before you do anything, make some rules that you both have to follow during and in the event that things end badly. For example, say you dated then broke up—instead of plotting out the safe zones of your dorm where he likely won’t be, you should both agree to be friendly when you see each other in the hall, or see one of you with a new boo.

Don’t do anything while your roommate is in the same room:

First, gross. And second, ugh, gross. How would you like it to wake up hearing strange sounds from the next bed over? Exactly. You need to treat your roommate exactly how you’d like to be treated. And I’d hope that means with a lot of respect.

Do stay focused on your life and your studies:

Just because you found a really great guy doesn’t mean that you should stop focusing on yourself. You need to do what you came to university or college to do: succeed! A lot of people might say that your studies, plus partying is important. Which, is totally fine, too. Just make sure that you’re using university for what you came there to do. It’s nice to party and have fun, just don’t lose sight of the goal in mind.

Don’t gossip about him after the fling is over:

If things go awry, or he breaks off your fling, don’t think that gossiping about him and his, er, performance is going to stop other ladies from going out with him. Plus, by gossiping, it’s only going to make you appear pathetic and immature.

Do use condoms:

This is a no brainer. It’s not going to be a good ole time if you have to drop out of university because you got knocked up. And just like Gwyneth Paltrow said during her guest appearance on Glee, “Everybody’s got a random.” It can be true, so use a condom, protect yourself!

Don’t get too attached:
From the movies “No Strings Attached” and “Friends with Benefits” we’ve learned that it’s not all that easy to just hook up and not have any feelings. Even DJ Pauly D admitted that he’s never met a girl that could ‘just’ hook up. So, if you’re in a casual relationship right now, it’s probably better not to invest too much into it. If you really don’t want to get hurt, either try really hard to keep it light, or simply just end the fling.

Single Girl & the City: One of the Guys or One of the Girls?

Lately I've been thinking about how I am as a person and what I could be doing wrong to steer guys away. Not saying that there is something wrong with me, but there must be something that doesn't exactly scream "Date me!" I started asking my guy friends why. "If I don't pay attention to sports does that automatically cast me off?" Obviously, the answer is no. But sometimes, guys do like girls who know about sports, video games, etc.

Having only paid attention to the Yankees (if I didn't, my Dad would have a fit) and played the super old video games (break out the 1980's Super Mario Bros.), I guess I have some experience and even my own ways of being a "guy's girl". But I don't go around reading the history of soccer and its players or know everything there is to know about the L.A. Lakers. I don't even know what the correct technical terms are for those sports. This lead me to question, do guys really like a guy's girl, or a girl's girl?

Directly quoting my friend Dan, "If a girl likes video games and knows about sports AND she's hot, it's the ultimate catch." Spoken like a true man! To be honest I can't even go against this. If I were a guy, I would probably want a girl to be chill enough to play video games with me or watch a game, drink a beer, and actually know what was going on. But what about the girly girls with no interest in sports or beer? Are they still valued anymore?

Of course, it all boils down to the girls personality and what kind of guy you're looking for. Chemistry between the guy and the girl in general is still number one. Perhaps the true verdict is a girl who has the perfect balance of both. However, I am not by any means saying that girls should go learn about sports if they have absolutely no interest in the matter; don't waste your time! As cliche as it sounds, the most important thing is to just be yourself. I, nor you, should change who we are for a guy.

What do you think? Are you more of a guy's girl or a girl's girl? And what type do you think guys are more drawn to?

Single Girl & the City: Mr. Right v. Mr. Right Now

Years ago, my friend claimed she was in love with a guy. In hearing this, many older people said, "you don't know what love is". She said something that I still remember: "You have to be 21 to drink, 16 to drive, and 18 to be legal, what age are you able to be in love?" She was ultimately questioning those skeptics by making the statement that being in love shouldn't have an age labeled on it. That was years ago, and I still think about whether some people have a point in saying that when you're young, you don't know anything about love. What age is it not considered puppy love anymore?

You may or may not have already thought someone is "the one." However, it's possible that eventually, you'll find out that he is not Mr. Right, and then that relationship will end. Then, we will meet another guy who we will swear is "the one" all over again, until that relationship has ended too. And finally, we will meet a guy who we will label "the one" like we have before, only this time, he actually will be "the one." But until that day comes, I can't help but question: Is every guy who leads up to Mr. Right simply Mr. Right Now?

In truth, this somewhat breaks my heart knowing that we will inevitably have to go through a whole slew of Mr. Right Now's in order to reach Mr. Right. Is this wasting our time? Is it wrong to be totally and completely picky so as to avoid Mr. Right Now? And should we even try? Perhaps Mr. Right Now will teach us something or better prepare us for Mr. Right. In college, are we aiming to find Mr. Right?  Will we miss out on the fun and wonderful freeing experience of just Mr. Right Now? If all we do is reach for commited relationshps will we regret not living up our college days later?

I have no answers, just questions. What do you think?

After the Honeymoon Phase: Why Are We Fighting?

In a new relationship, things are exciting and fun. There is hardly anything that bothers you about the other person. Give the relationship 6 months and things are certain to be a little less lovely and a bit more chaotic. Not to say that you and your significant other are doomed after half a year, but oftentimes people stop and think, “Is this the time I get off the boat, or stay for the entire trip?”

By this time in the relationship, the two of you are comfortable around each other, but there are things that now annoy you that you may not have noticed in your love-struck beginning. Most likely it something small, like the fact that he leaves a mess of his belongings every time he comes over. Or maybe you come over and cook dinner, but leave all the dirty dishes for him to clean up. Whatever it is, try not to let it get in the way of the relationship.

Couples often fight over small things that are truly not important. Many arguments are pointless and by the end, how many of you can honestly say you remember why you were fighting in the first place? Here are a few ways you can use a little self-control to fight less with your SO:
  • Think before you speak: before you snap at him, think about why you're frustrated and angry. Is it really directed at him? If it is, is it worth it to fight about it? Will winning the fight make you happier?
  • After you snap, take it back if you didn't mean it. We get it, sometimes when we're stressed or not feeling our best, we are sometimes a little harsh with our SO. But if you say something and realize you didn't mean it to sound so demanding, take it back before it escalates into a huge fight. Explain that you're just stressed and you didn't mean it in that way.
  • Have a discussion instead of holding it in until you blow up. One of the worst things you can do is avoid discussing a big issue until you explode. If something really bothers you, talk to your SO about it.

If you know you want to stay with him, instead starting a fight, do the opposite and do something loving to bring you closer together, rather than breaking you apart. You might be surprised how far a little self-restraint goes!

Deleting Someone on Facebook: Smart or Immature?

When it comes to the battle of the ex’s—ex-boyfriends, ex-girlfriends, ex-best friends, it can pose the question: do you stay friends with them on Facebook, seeing on a daily basis how fabulous their lives may be without you? Or, should you keep them as a Facebook friend so you can indulge in daily creep sessions? Most of the time it’s the complete impulse and anger towards the person that makes you hit the 'Remove Friend' button. But, by removing someone on Facebook, it may remove them from your homepage, but in some cases, not necessarily your life.

Here are some things to think of before you hit delete:

Make sure you’re not going to regret it later:
After me and one of my old best friends got into a huge fight, it ended in a text from her swearing at me and making it sound like she never wanted to see me again. So naturally, I thought, “Hmm, well, if you don’t want to talk to me, then I’m deleting you!” I, then, out of anger and thinking that this was what she wanted, hit remove friend. A few hours later, she apologized and I realized I couldn’t re-add without looking pathetic.

If you’re going to remove someone off of Facebook, just try to think ahead and see if it’s really going to solve anything, or if you’ll regret it later. Most of the time, you probably will.

It’s going to mean no more creeping for you:
After a break up, one of the things that you can shamelessly indulge yourself into is stalking your ex-boyfriend on Facebook. But if you happened to delete him after the break up due to seeing photos of him clearly moving on, and with a blond bimbo, or because you two left on bad terms—then, well, kiss your creep sessions goodbye. But on the other hand, it can be a good thing. You too can move on much easier because you’re not stuck in a standstill, wondering what he’s doing, instead, you’ll be more focused on your own life and maybe even finding a better guy.

It could make you look pathetic and immature:

From your point of view, deleting someone on Facebook could be seen as “Ha! Take that, we’re no longer Facebook friends!” But to others, it can be seen as, (in a sarcastic tone), "Oh, no. You deleted me off of Facebook. What will I do with my life now?”

Clearly, it isn’t going to do much. So the next time you consider deleting someone, realize that it could make you look bad. What you can do is make sure that you can’t see their profile by going into privacy settings and altering what they see of yours, and what you see of them. You can also remove their posts from coming up on your news feed, so that you don’t see a picture of your ex-boyfriend making out with another girl, or your ex-best friend going to the beach with her new bestie.

Just remember, Facebook is a social network, no matter how popular it has become over the years, you shouldn’t let it affect your life in a huge way. Cliché or not, you hold the power as to who you have as a friend on Facebook. So, if you feel the need to delete, and firmly believe that it’s the right thing to do—then sista, let your bitterness fly and delete away.

Are You Becoming a Crazy Ex
?

If you ever go through a break up that you really didn’t want to happen, or you were the one doing the break up only to realize that your One Truly got away—then it can turn a girl's mind into a frenzy. She’ll text her ex all the time, finds clever ways to bump into him, while “accidentally” looking beyond gorgeous in a skimpy dress and heels (even at church!), and she gets drunk just to drop him a pleading, brave message urging him to be hers again. An ex is an ex for a reason—but unfortunately, not everyone gets the memo on that. If you’re going through a break up now, have a friend going through it, or just want some lovely tips for the future. Then read on and understand how to avoid being the little, miss crazy ex-girlfriend.

Don’t text him:

I tell this to all my friends—if you have a recent ex boyfriend—don’t text him! If you actually want the relationship to work out again, the worst thing that you can do is try to be in contact with him non-stop. You need to cut off all contact and give him a chance to miss you. If you just drop off the face of the earth, he’ll become curious as to why you haven’t even offered up a breakup etiquette friendly hello. So from now on, give your thumbs a break, maybe even delete his number out of your phone and do not, I repeat, do not, give into texting him.

Don’t seem desperate:

No one wants a girl who’s nothing but a pity-party. If you’re in contact with him and try to make it seem like your life is nothing, you’re depressed without him, yadda yadda yadda… stop right there! What is attractive about that sentence? Nothing. Instead of moping around, waiting for him to suddenly realize that you two are meant to be—get out in life and start moving on if you can. Do things that will benefit you. Once you get your life together, you’ll not only appear more attractive in his eyes but you’ll start to realize that since you were fine before you met him, you can still be fine even when he’s gone.

Don’t try to make him jealous:

If you think that posting a bunch of Facebook pictures of you and other guys will have him running back to you on his knees pleading, you’re wrong. By texting him saying that a guy just hit on you, or showing up someplace with a hot guy because you know he’ll be there, you’re only going to make a fool out of yourself. If you really are serious about wanting to get back together with him, then you need to just stop all the games.

Don’t get drunk and carry your phone around you:

So you’re headed to a party where you plan on getting completely trashed. Upon drinking, all you can think about is the moment where you drunk text him and not feel guilty for saying the most pathetic, obscene things. First rule of drunk ex texting? Step. Away. From. The. Phone. How do you think he’ll react by getting a slurred message where it seems like he can inhale the alcohol right from your text? If you’re going out with your friends to drink, give them your phone to hold on to, or better yet, leave it at home. Go out and enjoy your night, meet new people, and stop obsessing about whether or not he replied. All he’s going to do is drive you insane by ignoring you and leaving you hanging. Understand that he’s clearly playing with your mind.

Find someone better:
Once you find the right guy who exceeds all that he ever did, you’ll begin to realize your ex’s annoying flaws and understand that you were clearly blind before, but now, with the right guy, you can see.

But hey, if crazy is your thing, then here are some sure-fire ways to get this poor guy scared and a second away from an issuing out a restraining order on you:

1.) Call him every five minutes, if he answers, breath very heavily and then hang up.

2.) Walk your dog by his house every night at the same time. If he ever comes out, look surprised, blurt out a sudden “hi!” and run away.

3.) Add all his friends and family members on Facebook. Find a family picture of them, photo shop yourself into the photo and post it as your profile picture
.

4.) Watch the video “Stuck like glue,” by Sugarland. You’re bound to get some awesome tips.

5.) Remember how in “How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days,” Andy created her very own family album for her and Ben? Do the exact same with your future children yodeling in Switzerland and all.

6.) When he goes on a date, find a way to be there… at all times. If they’re at a movie, dress up in disguise and sit behind them. Every time one of them tries to make a move, put your feet up on their chair and “accidentally” stop them from ever embracing. And when they go in for the good night kiss, run by suddenly, yelling out, “He has aids!”

7.) Send him some really, really bad poetry.

College Love: Should You Go Long Distance?

What should you do if you are in a relationship with someone who will soon be attending school in a different town, state, or country? As summertime winds down, the inevitable, “Should we stay together or break up?” question is bound to come up soon. And if it doesn’t? Well, that’s your answer right there. As a girl who had to make this decision for herself four years ago, I’ve listed the major pros and cons of staying with your sweetie past this summer.

Pro: You Stay Together

Whether he’s been your guy since you were five or fifteen, there’s something about him that you absolutely adore. Screw frat parties and guys you meet in class – your man has it all and no one else will do. Staying in a loving, committed relationship during times of change is comforting and provides much-needed support. You can avoid a painful and untimely break-up and go on with the hope that someday, you will live close to each other again, in a magical land of rainbows and puppies.

Con: You’re Not Really Together

Sure, there are cell phones and Skype and texting and e-mails, but at the end of the day, he won’t be there to rub your shoulders or make you dinner in the microwave or call you out for snorting when you laugh. Also, while your friends at school are going on dates or cuddling up with a movie on a cold Saturday night, you will most likely be alone. At least, you should be if you’re doing the whole relationship thing right. This is the crucial downfall of long distance – it is hard, and sometimes very sad, to be in a relationship with a guy who cannot be there when you want him to be.

Pro: Distance Makes the Heart Grow Fonder

You know how saying goes. And it’s true. When you spend weeks or months at a time apart from your guy, seeing him again is almost like seeing him for the first time. We’re talking butterflies, sweaty palms, and heart palpitations. And when you finally get that first glimpse of him? Game over. Because your time spent together is usually short, there is no sense in fighting or thinking about the future – it’s all happy times and giggles. You leave each other wanting more every time, and nothing makes a relationship better than that.

Con: Or It Doesn’t

As cheesy as it sounds, it’s true that college year is a time of “change” and “exploration.” Beginning college with a commitment from your past may seem like the right or easy thing to do, but people grow apart, and miles of separation can seriously change your relationship. If you don’t truly know that this is the guy for you, forever, you may soon realize that the person you were with him is not the person you are without him – and that’s ok too.

Single Girl & the City: The Commitment Category

I'm not sure whether I would classify this as being unfortunate or fortunate.  Guys don't look at me and see the girl they could have for right now or the girl they can just have a good time with; they look at me and see commitment. Understandably, at this age, not many guys I know are looking for a commitment. However, what they fail to realize is that I'm not looking to put a ring on your finger! I'm not looking to tie you down! In fact, even though I aspire to find true love one day, even I am somewhat afraid of being committed to having a long term relationship.

Earlier this summer, I met John through one of my best friends. We started texting, which led to talking on the phone, Facebook wall posts, and eventually him having feelings for me. He told my best friend that he felt like we had an awesome connection. He had everything I was looking for; he was sweet, caring, nice, smart, ambitious, and a family man (which isn't a requirement, but is a plus). However, for some reason, I wasn't interested! What was wrong with me? How could I have been complaining about being single, then finally find someone who was interested AND had met many of my desires yet not feel anything? I realized I was scared of having a guy constantly text me, call me, and ask about me. I'm not sure if it's because I'm not used to this sudden rush of attention or because something inside of me just isn't ready to commit.

He eventually realized I wasn't that interested and our contact with each other lessened. Now, I barely hear from him. The point of this story is, that I've been told I am the long commitment type. The type of girl a guy eventually might want to marry. However, this summer, I realized that I'm not ready for a commitment. I do want to have my freedom and meet guys, go on dates, and you know, live up my youth and college years. Yet, since I'm the commitment type, guys who are not looking for anything serious don't even want to try getting to know me.

Ironically, during my government class, my teacher was talking about a scandal. She mentioned how the mistress of a certain senator was just the girl "you have a a good time with." She then told us, "You don't want to be the girl that guys just have a good time with. You want to be the one that they marry. The ones who are just there for a good time never last long."  Of course I want to be the girl who guys consider to be the marrying type... eventually. But right now, as a college student, this status I should be proud of isn't getting me anywhere.

Help, please?

Who Should Pay on the First Date?

I was recently out to dinner with a friend, when she started talking about how a mutual friend of ours had gone on a first date. Seeing as this was prime dinner conversation, I proceed to ask the typical question—where did they meet? Does she like him? Who paid for dinner? As old fashion as this sounds, I believe if a guy is truly interest in pursuing a relationship with you, he will pay for the first date. To my surprise, they had gone Dutch for their first date. My friend insisted that my beliefs were outdated and that by splitting the check on the first date, each party does not “owe” their date anything. Her justification of splitting the check really hit me, has dating become so tainted that if a guy or girl pays for dinner, their date somehow owes them something?

Tell me your thoughts! Do you think it’s okay for a guy to pay on the first date, or do you prefer to split the bill until the two of you are more serious?

Caught That Annoying Love Bug?

You’re sitting at home with nothing to do—so you check your Facebook. Automatically, you browse through the home page hoping to find something juicy or rather scandalous in today’s world. But that could mean anything, including seeing that your friend is in love, again. Surprise, surprise, a relationship that consisted of exactly one week is now classified as forever and always. Now, where are the wedding bells?

It seems that lately, anyone could come down with the Romeo and Juliet effect. Oh you know, the one where they meet—their eyes catching each others from across the room, sparks are flying—or maybe it’s cause the candle just lit up the curtain by the window. But they don’t notice that, all they see is each other. He sees her, and she sees him, and he sees her seeing him. Ah, love.

If you happen to be one of those love struck girls who showcase that love a little bit too much, then read on, don’t hate me, and implement the following tips into your life. And if you’re not an offender, then feel free to agree completely, all the while forcing your friend who currently has the love bug to read this. ASAP.

Quit the mushy statuses already: I can’t tell you how much it irritates me to do my daily creep sesh of Facebook only to see that my cousin’s friends, who are thirteen, are apparently in “love.” Or so they say. These little younglings have Facebook statuses that go along the lines of, ‘I love you so much baby, you’re my one and only, forever and always.’ Uh, you’re thirteen; couldn’t you be classified as the baby in this situation? It doesn’t make sense that people are hurrying to fall in love, especially while being so young. Instead of racing to get out of high school—some teens are racing to the alter. You know what they say: what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas—talk about a fun after-graduation trip. But if you definitely are an extreme offender of writing mushy Facebook statuses—then please, for the love of God, stop! Instead, text that super sweet, make-other’s-want-to-puke message to your boo boo bear (I would put boyfriend, but by some of the statuses I’ve seen—clearly boo boo bear fits).

So, you’re in head-over-heels-life-seems-like-it’s-all-bubblegum-and-rainbows kind of love? Cool story, bro. Tell me more. Actually wait, please don’t.

Think about if it’s really love. I have a friend who met her fiancé when she was just sixteen. After about a week, she was convinced that they were meant to be. You would have thought that “falling in love” would require actually getting to know the person, but these days some people seem to be skipping that part.

Now, it isn’t fair to say that all quickies of love turn bad, right? But if you’re young and convinced that you’re over the moon in love—then maybe take a step back to get your feelings in check. A lot of girls mistake love for lust, especially while it’s the beginning of a relationship and everything is in that perfect stage. Soon, those lovely flaws will come out, and your feelings might not still be all there. So just make sure that you’re not investing too much into something that could just be another silly, young romance.

Be careful about who you’re making your everything. In your group of friends, you’re bound to have had at least one girlfriend who suddenly goes MIA as soon as a guy enters her life. She starts to ditch you, she spends all her time with the chosen one, and she gets defensive when you try to talk to her about it. If this is you, then you need to make sure that the person who you’re making your everything is really all he seems to be. In truth, what’s going to happen if the relationship doesn’t work out? How will it feel when you make someone everything—only to have them become, well, nothing? That leaves us loyal, single friends to bring over the only men you’ll ever need: Ben and Jerry, chocolate mint flavored, and the new Cosmopolitan to have you feeling confident, which screams: I’m a strong, independent woman, hear me roar!

But, unfortunately, that’s not the case all the time. If you’re friends are easily forgiving, then they’ll stick with you even after Mr. Wonderful waltzes out of your life. But for some, you may have to do major damage control to repair the friendships that you used to have. Just remember, having a boyfriend is all about balance—balance for him, balance for your friends, balance for yourself and your life.

It is true that love happens, but if you’re on Facebook and feel like professing your love to the world—please don’t.  Next time you meet that amazing, funny, charming guy—please, take it slooowly. Don’t scare the guy away by professing your love to him at two o’clock in the morning outside of his window, Romeo/stalker style. Instead, keep it to yourself. You’ll be doing him, yourself, and all the other bitter singles of the world a huge favour.

So, next time you get bitten by the love bug, stay inside and lock the doors. Oh, and keep the computer turned off. The rest of the world doesn’t need to be infected.

Ask Glossie: Did Your Guy Just Downgrade Your Date?

As if dating wasn’t stressful enough, we can all add one more worry to our list: being date downgraded. For example, if you have a date scheduled for a Saturday night dinner, they call and switch it to Thursday drinks. You have just been date downgraded!

Now, before you let your heart sink, there are a few legitimate reasons why your date changed your serious plans to something more casual.

Money
Instead of saying they didn’t budget accordingly for a more upscale place, they might just suggest meeting for drinks! Grabbing drinks, especially during the weekday means happy hour specials, which equals a less expensive date, and they still get to see you!

Nerves
If this is a first date, they may feel they don’t know you well enough to spend the Saturday night prime time with you. So, instead of cancelling, they may suggest something more casual.

No time
Okay, some people are totally lying when they say an unexpected project was just sprung on them at work, but your date may actually be pressed for time. So, this one is definitely a judgment call, but I will say you can usually tell if someone is blowing you off; don’t be afraid to follow your gut!

Of course, college guys don't always have the money to take you out to expensive dinners. The most important thing is to notice how much effort they put in, whether it's cooking a simple meal together or something swankier. However, if your date consistently downgrades your dates and never takes you on a "real" date, that might be a warning he's just not that into you.

Single Girl & the City: Taking Chances

To every girl out there who questions whether she should be the one to ask the guy out, or be the one to buy him a gift, or be the one to ask for his number... I say do it! Being gutsy is something many guys actually appreciate in a girl. Think about it. Guys are always expected to be the ones to ask a girl out, buy her a drink, ask for her phone number etc. Basically, it is seen as traditional for the guy to court the girl. However, times have changed. Nowadays, many women are seen as being powerful figures not only in the professional and political world but in the romantic sense as well.

Before college started, I never really pictured myself being a gutsy lover. The only gutsy thing I did for a guy during high school was ask him to the Sadie Hawkins dance, which didn't exactly turn out the way I hoped. Don't get me wrong, we had fun, but I really liked him but it didn't go anywhere serious. Then, when I started college I began to have somewhat of a "kindergarten crush" on a sophomore. I really wanted to get to know him but was shy and simply didn't know how to approach the situation. After many talks of encouragement from my wonderful friends and a few lines of "just do it!", one day before Valentine's Day weekend I introduced myself to him.

I then had this self proclaimed "great" plan to send him a Valentine. The softball team at my school was hosting candy grams which is basically chocolates that you can send to anyone you want with a note (optional). I sent him the chocolates and also a note which said, "I think you have a really nice smile. Happy Valentine's Day." I signed my full name and everything. Days went by, weeks, and eventually months. No response.  It left me questioning. Did he really not appreciate this gesture? Is he really a jerk? Did he even receive it? Sure enough, a mutual friend told me that my crush had not received anything on Valentine's Day. I was disappointed that my "great" plan hadn't worked out and he didn't receive anything. However, another curve ball was thrown my way when our mutual friend told me that they talked about me and my crush was basically uninterested. Another crush gone no where. What tally number am I on now?

Some people may say that what I did was stupid and too forward. However, I personally thought it was a very sweet gesture and that it was my time to do something for a guy who, yes I may have not known, but who seemed genuine. Months have passed and do I regret what I did? No. Not one bit. In fact, I look back and pat myself on the back for having such courage to do something like that. To take a chance with a guy and be a bit gutsy. I showed myself that I could do it amidst all the butterflies.

If you believe something is right or sweet or just nice in general, go with your gut feeling. It may not lead you to your "perfect man," a relationship, or even a date, but at the end of the day it's not necessarily about sweeping your dream man off of his feet. Although that has a lot to do with it, acting upon our feelings is much more of a personal journey. By performing these acts we are showing ourselves just how thoughtful, caring and courageous we are as human beings.

In turn, I believe each time we show ourselves how thoughtful and courageous we are by being a gutsy lover, we are one step closer to our dream romance. One of my favorite movies (because I can relate to it heavily) is "He's Just Not That Into You." The main character, Gigi, is completely obsessed about finding true love. When she meets Alex, a man who manages a bar, he begins to give her advice about men and their true nature. Needless to say, feelings develop within Gigi, yet Alex is one out of the many men she has encountered who just "is not that into her". Upon finding out how he feels Gigi quickly responds to him by saying one of my favorite quotes: "I may dissect each little thing and put myself out there so much but at least that means that I still care. Oh! You've think you won because women are expendable to you. You may not get hurt or make an ass of yourself that way, but you don't fall in love that way either."

This quote explains the true essence of what I am saying. By taking risks and possibly even making an ass of yourself, you are at least putting yourself out there and trying to find love. Don't wait to make your move. My guy friends have told me it is extremely attractive when a girl is straightforward and knows what she wants. The only thing missing is you, your confidence and courage. So, once you've got those intact, go get 'em tiger!

Confessions of a 'Not It' Sports Girl

We love Beckham…uh, soccer, we mean soccer.
Confession #1—love makes girls do crazy, crazy things.

Picture this—you’re on a first date and so far you have managed to follow all the tips Google has graciously searched for you. Plus, you’ve even managed not to snort a laugh, choke on your lemon chicken, or admit that you have already envisioned what your children will look like. Sounds picture perfect, right? That is until the conversation takes a turn for the worst into (cue dramatic sound effect) Dun Dun Dunnn… sports. Instantly, you feel the nervous sweat bead on your forehead, your mind curses Google for not warning you about the oh, so obvious topic. But who knows, perhaps Google thought your date was a tree-hugging hippie, who wanted to talk about inner feelings before skipping dessert to summon a moonlight dance under the sky. It may not sound realistic, but you get the picture.

It’s quite obvious to say that we now live in a world where sports are becoming increasing popular to discuss, especially around guys—giving you three choices: stuff your mouth with food to avoid talking, fake a dramatic faint, or tell a lie. So, what do you do? Well, you lie—ding ding ding! We have a winner, or in this case, a cheater.

Confession #2—Girls are amazing multi-taskers, we can check out the score and the quarterback all at the same time.

All around us, we’re receiving different advice about how to act around guys. Even the top woman’s magazines—Cosmopolitan, Glamour, or Seventeen recommend changing yourself so that some handsome prince will come sweep you off your feet and bring you to Disney World. Too bad this is reality—not the movies. But some of these tips revolve around changing your whole sports persona. For example, if you flip to the 'All About Guys' section in magazines, you will see most of the tips revolve around having a sports night with your guy. Even in high schools today, some girls will make T-shirts for their crush before heading off to the game to cheer. But is it for the love of the game, or just the hype? The real question is: do girls love sports for the game or to score the guy?

Think carefully, but whether you pretend to like sports to impress a guy or you’re just joining his friends for a night at the bar—when it comes to sports and guys here’s what not to do:

1) Pretending you know what the heck is going on.
2) Cheering just because everyone else is—while really, you’re beyond lost.
3) Bringing up how hot the quarterback is… every five seconds.
4) Telling him about your shopping trip while he’s watching the game and getting mad when he pretends to listen.
5) Chugging down a pint of beer because of all the extra spicy wings you ate.
6) Saying you have a favorite player, when really, you only like him for his sexy looks.
7) Wearing a jersey just because it looks “cute.”
8) Swearing at the referee during every call.
9) Making his team your favorite, no matter how much they suck.
10) Making him skip the big game because your best friend and her boyfriend just broke up, and you need him there for “moral support and guy advice.”
11) Walking in front of the TV during the game.

So next time you’re talking to a guy about sports, don’t stuff your mouth full of food, fake a faint, or even lie. Instead, admit to him and yourself that you’re most definitely a 'not it' sports girl and damn well proud of it.

Ask Glossie: Eight Things to Not Tell Your Parents About Your Partner

A friend of mine was dating a guy, and they had hit the time milestone where you introduce your boyfriend to your parents. As she filled me in on this rendezvous, it sounded like everything went great! Her boyfriend and dad talked about sports and seem to be forming a mutual respect for the other; that is until her boyfriend left. Instantaneously, her dad was saying how her boyfriend was lazy, unmotivated and basically a waste of time. (I don’t think it helped that her boyfriend was 22 and didn’t have a college degree)

So, I asked my dad what else a parent would never want to hear about their daughter’s boyfriend, and he gave me this list!
  1. That he has a record
  2. That he has cheated before
  3. That he has suffered/currently suffering an addiction (any addiction—even you!)
  4. That he plays video games incessantly and or belongs to a Dungeons and Dragons' group!
  5. That he has no drive, motivation or ambition
  6. That he is estranged from his family because that equals tons of baggage!
  7. That he is a momma’s boy—Note to self, he will always put her above you!
  8. He believes he is a zombie hunter!

If your current love fits any of the above criteria it’s probably best to not tell your parents!

Have you ever accidentally spilled too much information about your new partner to your parents before? What was their reaction?!

Single Girl & The City: College Dating, a Rude Awakening?

When I was starting college a year ago, I believed I could find a genuine relationship. Of course, when I told my friends, I was quickly shot down with: "College guys just want a good time", "College guys don't want a relationship" or "College guys are all jerks". With my optimism in hand and determination to prove them all wrong, I talked to guys on campus and was surprised to find that some guys on campus actually seemed interested.

The guys who would try to chat me up did a pretty good job.  Although I'm a hopeless romantic, I must say I have some skepticism when it comes to pick up lines. I'm constantly questioning whether the guy is telling the truth or just feeding me some bull. Well, let's just say that the second semester of my freshman year truly did show me why my skepticism peeps out from time to time: it's necessary. Yes, as much as my friends would try to tell me all college guys wanted was sex, I would try to feed them the same line I'm sure you've all heard and believed at least once in your life: "Maybe he's different. There has to be some guy out there who wants more than that." And while I do completely agree that not all guys match this description of only wanting parties and hook ups, I have officially been slapped in the face to realize that a lot of the time, guys at this age truly just want some fun.

I've been slapped by this reality a couple times during the past months. I won't write a novel and tell you every single situation in complete detail, but I will tell you about one guy. This guy, who always stared at me, finally decided to introduce himself one night at the library. Admiring his boldness, I continued to say hi and carry conversations with him from time to time. He then proceeded to use his moves and get my number, which then lead to flirty texts, which then lead to my friends telling me he obviously wanted a hook up... which then lead to me denying it and believing maybe he truly did just want to get to know me.

To wrap this train wreck up, we became friends and joked around here and there. Then one night after I got off from work, he texted me asking to come over. Naive me thought, "Okay, what's wrong with friends hanging out?" and went to visit him in his dorm after a quick visit at my friends. We starting by conversing and joking around. Before you know it, he was trying to make out with me on his bed. Did I go along with it? No! I'm a firm believer that if something doesn't feel right, then why go with it? This situation didn't feel right with me, so I somehow moved my way out of it (literally) and proceeded to leave his room. Feeling confused, I awaited to see how he would treat me after I "rejected" him. Did he acknowledge my presence when I saw him? No. Did he ever text me again? No.

Do all guys just want hook ups? I can't stereotype all college guys, so I'll say no. However, my first year of college truly showed me that even though it is just a stereotype, it's a stereotype for a reason! No, not all of these guys are bad. But during this time of their life, a commitment or relationship is the last thing some of them are thinking about. And even though some of us girls think so far ahead of ourselves and analyze every little thing, it won't make our own version of "Prince Charming" come any quicker.

So I propose a solution: wait. If you're the type of girl who likes the thrill of a random hookup or friends with benefits, then more power to you. But if deep down we want a relationship, and if we continue to pine after every guy who uses us, desires us one minute then forgets us the next, or kisses us at a party and then goes M.I.A., we will miss out on all the good there is in college and life in general. And there's SO much fun to be had! Besides, who says waiting has to be boring?

The Seven Deadly Sins of Romantic Texting

Text messaging has permanently altered the way men and women communicate with each other when it comes to dating and love. Many of us over-analyze the romantic dilemmas that occur because of text messaging, but follow this advice to avoid the seven deadly sins of texting your man:

Wrath

Wrath, or anger, happens all too often when texting. When talking in person, you can read your guy’s body language and listen to his tone of voice to understand what he means. Without these cues, deciphering an ambiguous text message can be maddening and can lead to many misunderstandings. Don’t lash out via text message if you’re upset with your man! Call him to talk it out instead.

Greed

If you’re playing the field a bit, it can be tempting to mass text a few guys to see who will “bite,” so to speak. This is greedy and unfair to the poor chaps who think they’re the sole recipient of your message. If you must text multiple dudes at once, you should at least send out individual messages with personalized greetings. Play on, player. Play on.

Sloth

In this day and age, the cell phone is practically a new appendage on the human body. We all know that everyone keeps his or her phone close by, so don’t be a sloth and lazily take hours to reply to a text. This goes double if you’re texting about plans the two of you have later. Sloth-like behavior leaves the other person hanging while making you seem uninterested, both of which negatively impact your relationship.

Pride

So he’s a player – or a sloth – and took one whole day to respond to your text. Many times, a girl’s pride will demand that she wait an equal amount of time before replying. This tactic is counterproductive, as he likely doesn’t care about you or your text very much to begin with, or else he would have responded ASAP. Playing games by timing your reply to his tardy texts is an utter waste of your time and energy.

Lust

The rise of “sexting” has made many a lady vulnerable to the ugly side of text messaging. Never send your guy sexy pictures or suggestive messages if you are not in a committed relationship – and even then, you might want to keep your guard up. Once a lusty message is sent, there is no way of taking it back; if things go awry, you’ve already sent him all of the blackmail material he needs.

Envy

If girl feels jealous, and checks her guy’s phone for evidence of flirtatious texts he may have sent or received, it all goes downhill from there. Never look at the messages in his phone. It’s wrong and breaks trust between the two of you forever. Having the urge to snoop in the first place means there are greater issues at hand in the relationship; express your feelings of envy directly to save time and heartache.

Gluttony

Texting is quick and easy and has conditioned us to expect rapid responses and constant communication. A gluttonous texter can’t put down her phone because she’s texting her guy that her breakfast smells weird or that her shoe is pinching her foot or that she saw a pigeon with one wing. Some things are better left untexted. Use texts sparingly, as a way of checking in or saying hello, and they become all the sweeter.
