The start of New York Fashion Week officially kicked off the month of fashion shows and presentations in the fashion capitals of the world, New York, London, Milan and Paris. Spring collections mark the beginning of a new year in fashion, and with the month of shows over, it’s the perfect time to recap the trends from the past collections. Here are the trends from New York, London and Milan you’ll likely be seeing in the magazines, the street style blogs or even on your campus!
Digital Rave
Fashion is always one step ahead and most brands have Twitter, Instagram and tons of Facebook likes, but did you ever think you’d see the internet spill over onto the runway? Diane Von Furstenberg accessorized her models in space-age Google glasses, and the designers behind Proenza Schouler have said that the pixelated prints and bright colors of their spring show were inspired by the internet. The collection looked like the effortlessly cool looks all the street style bloggers will be rushing to snap up next season with boxy leather jackets and vests and leather cut-outs. Alexander Wang also took on the leather look with cut-out leather dresses, and even more surprising was when the lights lowered and all the dresses began glowing, a modern day fashion rave. It is safe to say that the internet and tech has had a major influence on fashion.
A Nod to Mod
Fashion stays loyal to past eras and every once in a while a major trend from the past pops up (for example, last spring it was the 20s era drop waist). Now designers are drawing inspiration from the 60s with geometric patterns, stripes and mod shapes. Michael Kors subtly hinted to the era, but it went beyond that -- at Moschino it was all out 60s with beehives, shift dresses and block patterns. Marc Jacobs took a similar route with heavy lidded models and nude lips, outfitted in stripes with boxy little bags.
All That’s Fit To Print
No matter the city or the season, prints are the one trend you can count on seeing. Whether it be from print-savvy designers like Mary Katrantzou with her hyper-realistic photo prints to to print experts like Missoni, there’s always print on the runways. This season the most popular patterns were stripes, mod geometric shapes and photo prints seen by the likes of Preen and Proenza Schouler. Some wildcards were the multicolored chain print at Versus, the sweet ribbon pattern at Christopher Kane and Erdem's snake prints and florals.
Sheer Genius
It’d be pretty hard to find a show this season that didn’t feature something sheer. From the sheer cut-outs at Topshop Unique to sheer and printed overlays at Prabal Gurung, it looks like this notoriously difficult trend to pull off will be big for spring. Word to the wise -- proceed with caution! This trend isn’t exactly classroom or workplace friendly, unless of course you can manage to pull it off right, meaning no visible undergarments!
