Deleting Someone on Facebook: Smart or Immature?

When it comes to the battle of the ex’s—ex-boyfriends, ex-girlfriends, ex-best friends, it can pose the question: do you stay friends with them on Facebook, seeing on a daily basis how fabulous their lives may be without you? Or, should you keep them as a Facebook friend so you can indulge in daily creep sessions? Most of the time it’s the complete impulse and anger towards the person that makes you hit the 'Remove Friend' button. But, by removing someone on Facebook, it may remove them from your homepage, but in some cases, not necessarily your life.

Here are some things to think of before you hit delete:

Make sure you’re not going to regret it later:
After me and one of my old best friends got into a huge fight, it ended in a text from her swearing at me and making it sound like she never wanted to see me again. So naturally, I thought, “Hmm, well, if you don’t want to talk to me, then I’m deleting you!” I, then, out of anger and thinking that this was what she wanted, hit remove friend. A few hours later, she apologized and I realized I couldn’t re-add without looking pathetic.

If you’re going to remove someone off of Facebook, just try to think ahead and see if it’s really going to solve anything, or if you’ll regret it later. Most of the time, you probably will.

It’s going to mean no more creeping for you:
After a break up, one of the things that you can shamelessly indulge yourself into is stalking your ex-boyfriend on Facebook. But if you happened to delete him after the break up due to seeing photos of him clearly moving on, and with a blond bimbo, or because you two left on bad terms—then, well, kiss your creep sessions goodbye. But on the other hand, it can be a good thing. You too can move on much easier because you’re not stuck in a standstill, wondering what he’s doing, instead, you’ll be more focused on your own life and maybe even finding a better guy.

It could make you look pathetic and immature:

From your point of view, deleting someone on Facebook could be seen as “Ha! Take that, we’re no longer Facebook friends!” But to others, it can be seen as, (in a sarcastic tone), "Oh, no. You deleted me off of Facebook. What will I do with my life now?”

Clearly, it isn’t going to do much. So the next time you consider deleting someone, realize that it could make you look bad. What you can do is make sure that you can’t see their profile by going into privacy settings and altering what they see of yours, and what you see of them. You can also remove their posts from coming up on your news feed, so that you don’t see a picture of your ex-boyfriend making out with another girl, or your ex-best friend going to the beach with her new bestie.

Just remember, Facebook is a social network, no matter how popular it has become over the years, you shouldn’t let it affect your life in a huge way. Cliché or not, you hold the power as to who you have as a friend on Facebook. So, if you feel the need to delete, and firmly believe that it’s the right thing to do—then sista, let your bitterness fly and delete away.
