Makeup Emergency: What to Do If You Run Out Of...

Waking up and finding out you ran out of product mid-application can be quite the awkward situation. But don’t fret because we have a solution for everyone’s worst case scenario. Follow the helpful suggestions for “what to do if your run out of...”

Eyeliner
When your liquid liner dries out, eyeshadow will become your BFF. Reach for the darkest shade and run it along your upper and lower lash line with an eyeshadow brush or the tip of a smaller eyeshadow brush. It is effective, smoldering and even sexier! Walk out of your dorm like you’re Adriana Lima, no seriously!

Eyebrow Pencil
Never fear because your mascara will fix everything! Sweep one coat of your mascara onto your eyebrows and comb it with a spoolie brush. Voila! This solution is perfect for when you’re in a rush, too.

Eyebrow Gel
If you worry about taming your Cara Delevingne eyebrows every morning, never fear, hairspray can help. Spray some hairspray onto your spoolie brush and smooth. This is also a cheaper alternative to buying an eyebrow gel.

Bronzer
Maybe you’re on your period and you’re feeling bloated, and as it turns out your bronzer fell into pieces last night. Before you think about skipping out on your makeup routine, run to your eyeshadow collection. If you have a matte brown shadow, use this as your bronzer. You see, no need to fuss! Another great tip is to apply blush on the tops of your cheekbones not to the apples for a supermodel effect.

Blush
You can try the oldest trick in the book, pinch your cheeks, or apply a sheer layer of lipstick to your cheeks!

Concealer
Your skincare routine has been spot-on this semester, you’ve made sure to remove your makeup every night, even on those hard nights when you stumble in at 4 a.m., and you never skip moisturizing. Once midterms roll around, a pesky breakout emerges. As it turns out, you haven’t replaced your concealer in weeks, what to do?! Double up on your foundation, not everywhere, but just on your blemishes and dark circles. Also remember, blemishes aren’t as noticeable to others as they are to you. Play up your best features, like your eyes and lips, to detract from any pimples.

Mascara
This is when one of the oldest beauty products, petroleum jelly, comes into play. Run this along your lashes, place your index finger below your lash line, and blink several times. Now your lashes are more perky! You look awake for class, and no one will know you pulled an all-nighter.

Lipstick
Picture this: you buy this awesome designer lipstick at Sephora that you use everyday this semester, but on a girl’s night out, all your friends ask to use your prize possession. As a good sport, you don’t turn them down. Before you freak out about an empty tube at the end of the night, think about your resources. Creme blush comes to save the day. We know it’s not your signature color balm, but it will still give you a pop of color.

Ladies, remember, we all get stuck in a beauty emergency. Don’t think you have to pop into the nearest drugstore just because you lost your favorite lipstick or shattered your bronzer.

Beauty Woes: 6 Signs You're Wearing Too Much Makeup

Not to be the bearer of bad news, but in the process of primping, you can get a tad bit carried away. Sometimes it’s leaving without checking your makeup in natural light or missing lipstick on your teeth. By no means are we judging -- we have ALL been there -- but as your beauty-conscious BFF, we want to alert you to the beauty faux pas made most often.

Your Roomie Can’t Recognize You
If your roomie can’t recognize you with a bare face, you have a big problem! Makeup can give you confidence, but you shouldn’t feel insecure about letting your natural beauty shine. So forgo the falsies for something more natural; we bet you are even more beautiful when wearing a little less.

Cakey Face
Although the boy sitting next you in English class may not know you have foundation on, the girl on your other side will know for sure if foundation is layered rather than lightly buffed. Don’t let the boy, who knows nothing about makeup, know you are drenched in it! If you feel like foundation isn’t providing enough coverage, buy a creamy concealer rather than adding more foundation.

Spider Lashes
Full, luscious lashes are coveted by makeup mavens everywhere, some of us even use two-to-three mascaras on a daily basis! Make sure your miracle mix doesn’t cross over from voluminous to spidery. Lashes should not look crunchy! Try using a curler to get a more dramatic look rather than multiple mascaras.

You Never Leave Your Dorm Room Without a Full Face
Oh, ladies, we know this can be a toughie. Since it is your first experience living with potential BFs, you want to look your best. But the truth is, you don’t need to put on some mascara and lipstick to visit your friend’s dorm on the other side of the building. Don’t put your mind or face through that stress. Let your skin -- and the real you -- breathe. We think you’ll be pleasantly surprised when you still get compliments with nothing but a fresh face.

You Constantly Retouch
If your friends automatically know they can find you between classes in the bathroom retouching, it is important to check that you’re not overdoing it. It’s likely you did not need to powder your nose an hour after you applied your makeup or apply more blush. Remember, you are trying to keep it pretty and professional, so invest in some Smashbox primer, and be confident that you’ll be covered for hours.

Your Makeup Transfers
Finding makeup smears on your phone and clothes means you didn’t set your makeup well. We recommend Makeup Forever’s translucent powder to keep everything in place.

Remember beauties, we are not asking you ditch your smoky eyes and red lips, but we want you to look the best overall without your effort being obvious. And most importantly, you still want to look like you at the end of the day.

Manicure Must-Haves

Nothing beats the feeling of fresh manicured hands. Whether it’s the bold colors, the relaxing hand massage or simply knowing that your nails are cleaned up, a great manicure goes a long way to making your day a bit brighter. As college students, it’s hard to visit the salon to get a weekly manicure, plus the cost digs into funds needed for books and groceries. But your nails don’t have to suffer since you always have the option of an affordable DIY manicure. To help you to an at-home mani refresh, College Gloss has compiled a list of manicure must-haves for a long-lasting, chip-free finish.

Nail Polish Remover
To start a great manicure, always use nail polish remover, even if you don’t have polish on your nails. This gives nails a clean, oil-free surface to work with. A non-acetone option is always a better choice, as it causes far less damage to nails and cuticles. Plus, it won’t bleach color if you spill. For the on-the-go girl, an acetone formula will help remove polish at a quicker pace, but only use it occasionally as it can dry out nails easily.

Try: Acetone-Free Nail Polish Remover by OPI

Nail Clippers
For nails that are a bit too long for comfort, a pair of durable nail clippers can easily solve the problem. To avoid ingrown nails or accidentally cutting nails too short, cut straight across rather than at an angle.

Try: Precision Nail Clipper Set by Sephora

Nail File
A proper nail file will smooth the edges of nails well and will protect nails against damage, instead of making them weaker. A helpful trick of the trade is to file nails in one direction, rather than going back and forth in a sawing motion, which will weaken nails and will not shape them properly. A nail file is great for smoothing out edges of nails that are too short to cut but still need to be managed. They also can shape nails into a variety of popular looks, including oval, round, almond and square.

Try: Antibacterial Extra Coarse Nail File by Les Mirages

Cuticle Stick and Balm
Despite what salons might say, it’s not an absolute requirement to trim cuticles. In fact, this practice can cause more harm than assistance, especially if the cuticle trimmer is not sanitized or used properly, as this can lead to infection. Instead, manage cuticles by first nourishing with a moisturizing balm or cream designed specifically for cuticles. Then use a cuticle stick to push back cuticles so that polish can last longer without cuticles growing out too soon. Try using a metal cuticle stick instead of a wooden one; it’s a more sterile option that will last longer.

Try: Professional Chrome Cuticle Pusher by Marianna and Lemon Butter Cuticle Cream by Burt’s Bees

Base Coat
Many girls understand the importance of top coat when it comes to an awesome manicure, but never forget the base coat. The base coat adheres to nails, and it can affect the entire finish of nails, even if you invest in an expensive color or top coat. Therefore, it’s important to choose a high quality base coat so that nails can stay chip-free for longer.

Try: Bonder Base Coat by Orly

Nail Color
The most creative aspect of a manicure is, of course, a fun nail color. With so many shades, brands and varieties to choose from, the options are truly endless. If you’re a frequent nail painter, invest in formaldehyde-free colors, which will keep damage to a minimum as they don’t have harmful chemicals. Also be on the lookout for formulas that claim to offer a “gel-like shine,” which means that they are similar to Shellac, which lasts longer than a standard polish.

Try: The ColorStay Longwear Nail Enamel Collection by Revlon, which is vibrant collection of colors that are all Formaldehyde, Toluene and DBP free

Top Coat
After applying base coat and two coats of your favorite color, waiting for nails to dry thoroughly in between, apply a long-wear top coat. Many fast-dry formulas work well if you’re in a rush or if you prefer to paint your nails several times a week, but their staying power and chip prevention factors are not very strong. Instead, look for a top coat that advertises with buzzwords like “shield” or “protection” in its title. These formulas may take a bit longer to dry, but they’ll be worth it in the end.

Try: Polishield 3-in-1 Top Coat by Orly

Nail Polish Remover Pen
Easily fix polish that has gotten on the edges of nails by using a nail polish remover pen. You can maneuver around nails to wipe off any residue that may have been left.

Try: No More Mistakes Manicure Clean-Up Pen by Sally Hansen

By using these tools and a steady hand, you’ll have a long-lasting Instagram-worthy DIY manicure to show off to roommates and friends!

5 Under $20: Best Sephora Finds

Walking into a Sephora store can be like walking into a candy store, as rows upon rows of colorful eye shadows, lipsticks and nail polishes makes it hard to walk out of the store empty-handed. Since 1970, Sephora has been a staple store for those who love cosmetics. Sephora carries over 190 brands of beauty products, but College Gloss has identified a few beauty bargains that shouldn’t be missed.

1. Perfecting Ultra-Smoothing Primer

This best-selling primer works to perfect your skin’s look, which helps to extend the wear of foundation or eye shadow. It evens out the complexion, while hiding imperfections, and is dermatologist tested.

For oily skin, it can be hard to find an exfoliating scrub that doesn’t irritate skin while still unclogging pores and helping to attain a clearer complexion. Clinique’s scrub is gentle and refreshing. It is sure to invigorate oily skin and make it smooth.

3. Too Faced Kabuki Brush

As far as kabuki brushes go, it doesn’t get much cuter than this pink metallic brush from Too Faced cosmetics. The brush is great for on-the-go makeup application, and the synthetic bristles keep this brush clean.

For anyone looking for a great moisturizer that also helps treat and prevent acne, look no further. This lightweight formula calms redness, reduces oil and soothes skin, all while gently treating breakouts.

One of the most unique finds on Sephora is this typography nail polish set. This long-lasting nail polish set comes in two colors, and the results of the typography nail design are fabulous.

For years, Sephora has been a beauty mecca for makeup professionals and amateurs alike; it is a store of amazing cosmetic finds for all. Whether it is makeup, brushes or nail polish, Sephora has some great must-haves at under $20.

BB Cream vs. CC Cream: What's the Difference?

Makeup and skincare industries recently sparked a trend by introducing BB and CC creams, which provide skin with a foundation-style finish as well as sun protection. It’s important to know the basics about each before making a decision on which product works best for your skin.

BB Cream
The crowd-pleasing Asian import, fully named “Beauty Balm,” hit the industry by storm. A current US favorite by makeup artists and beauty gurus, BB cream is well known for providing SPF protection and antioxidants to the skin. Drugstore brands, such as Maybelline and Garnier, as well as high-end classics like Laura Geller and Clinique, have incorporated their own unique twist on this do-it-all product. If you feel that tinted moisturizer is too light or foundation is too heavy, this is the product for you.

CC Cream
The newly launched “complexion corrector” has been a hit, from brands such as Smashbox and Almay. The product is said to “be lighter on the skin [than a BB cream]…more of a whipped, light, fluffy feel and finish-kind of the new and improved BB,” according to makeup artist Nico Guilis. Many CC creams only provide the SPF benefit in their product, compared to BB creams, which provide both SPF and antioxidants. The most rewarding feature of CC creams is their ability to cover and conceal compared to their BB cream competition.

Similarities
Both BB and CC creams are designed to replace the use of serum, moisturizer, primer, foundation and sunscreen. They are helpful for girls on the go and for those looking to simplify their makeup routine. The variety of shades available from both types of products is limited to between four and six, so the ability to mix and match for a perfect shade is much less versatile compared to foundation.

Although both products contain SPF, they should not be substituted for sunscreen. Since the formulas are tinted, many women will opt to use less of the product as to not look “orange;” therefore, they may not be receiving adequate amounts of SPF needed to protect the skin. The best bet is to use a sunscreen designed for use on the face (after cleansing and before applying product) for proper sun protection.

Overall, the main- yet subtle- difference between the two creams is their amount of coverage. The prices, shade variety and SPF value of each is practically equal. So if you’re looking to cover acne scars, dark marks, redness or existing blemishes, choose a CC cream. If your main concern is simply using a product easier to apply than foundation that will also provide benefits and a bit of coverage, stick with a BB cream instead.

How To Create a Natural-Looking Smokey Eye

The trendy, mysterious smokey eye is a favorite of glamorous celebs like Mila Kunis and Kim Kardashian, but the classic smokey eye can be for glosser girls to wear any day with a simple switch from sizzling metallics to a matte finish. Through the use of more natural shades, such as bronze and light brown, it is still possible to achieve the same illusion of accentuated eyes without the use of harsh black and gray pigment. Follow these steps for a more natural-looking smokey eye without losing intensity.

1. Primer

Start off with a primer on the eyelid and eye creases. College Gloss recommends the Shadow Insurance Anti-Crease Eyeshadow Primer ($20 at Ulta). The primer will prepare eyes for shadow by preventing creasing, ensuring a long-lasting finish.

2. Eyeshadow

Apply a light mauve shadow over the entire lid. This shade may look strange on its own, but once other colors are added, it will look much more natural.

Apply a light brown or golden shadow in the crease. The darker pigment will help to make your eyes pop. You also can blend this shade over the lid if the lids seem too light using a blending brush. CG recommends using the Angled Blender Brush from SOHO Beauty ($8.99).

Use a medium brown shade to contour and continue to blend.

3. Highlight

To highlight, apply an off-white or crème-colored shadow under the brows, as well as in the corners of the eyes.

4. Lashes

To finish the look, curl the eyelashes and apply one-to-two coats of your favorite brown or black mascara. If you’re an eyeliner junkie, you also can feel free to add some brown or black liner on your lash line.

Now you’ll be ready to conquer your job or internship in style without worrying about an overwhelming makeup look. Turn this classy date look up a notch by simply adding a swipe of darker shadow onto the lids or in the corners of the eyes. To make the look work for girls night, add a swipe of glittery shadow. The smokey eye look is both classic and versatile and now perfectly suitable for a day look.

How to Wear Makeup with Glasses

Choosing makeup to wear with glasses can be tricky. There are many factors, such as frame size, color and style, which can all determine the best makeup choices. Below is a classic look that will suit any pair of glasses and make you stand out from behind the frames.

Classic Eyes

When eyes are hidden behind thick frames it’s important to accentuate them enough so that they look defined but not too extreme. A classic eye with black eyeliner and neutral shadow tones is the best way to go with glasses. For a more dramatic look at night, add liner to the bottom waterline and blend in a black or dark gray into the eye socket for a sultry smoky eye.

Eyebrows are Key

Bold filled-in brows can help balance the face when wearing glasses. Finding the right shade to fill the brows in is as equally important as choosing a lipstick or hair color. Look for a compact that comes with two shades so you can blend them to the desired darkness. Use an angled liner brush to blend the color into the brows so that they appear groomed and defined.

Rosy Cheeks

Larger frames can block the face but a pop of color on the cheeks can really bring the face forward. Apply a cream blush to the apples of the cheeks and blend out towards the temples. For a more contoured look, apply a light bronzer to the hollows of the cheeks.

Nude Lip

Choosing a nude or light-colored lip is especially important with colored frames because you don’t want lip color competing with your glasses. Look for a cream lipstick that complements your skin tone. If nude doesn’t suit you, look for a soft rose shade which will complement the flush on the cheeks.

With this classic look, you will be sure to turn heads and rock your glasses. Be sure to carry an eyeglasses case around with you during the day, just in case you need to take them off. And don’t be afraid to play the look up at night to be even more dramatic.

Top 5 Sexy Summer Beauty Essentials

It’s time to enjoy warm weather perks: longer days, adventure-filled nights, beach trips, boardwalks, ice cream and bright bathing suits. The warm weather means one more adjustment -- swapping out essentials in your makeup routine. Here are five simple products to keep you looking gorgeous all summer long.

BB Cream

Since this beauty essential made its way to the U.S. from Asia, College Gloss has been in love. BB cream is effortless, while providing the similiar beautiful finish and coverage of foundation. BB creams are also lightweight, provide critical SPF and vitamins and will correct and enhance your features flawlessly. CG recommends the Dr. Jart Water Fuse BB Beauty Balm Multi-Action Skincare + Makeup with SPF 25 (around $33 from Birchbox or Sephora). This BB cream comes in one shade designed to perfect according to your skin tone. To save instead of spend, try Maybelline New York Dream Fresh 8-in-1 Beauty Balm Skin Perfector (around $9 at Ulta in 5 shades).

Waterproof Mascara

Every girl knows that a little mascara can go a long way toward enhancing a look. The summertime is no exception for using this cosmetic staple. Waterproof mascara is a great option during graduation and wedding season when tears could spout at any second. A budget-friendly product is the e.l.f. (Eyes Lips Face) Essentials Regular & Waterproof Mascara Duo ($1 from eyeslipsface.com).

Tinted Lip Balm

Forgo heavy lipstick, which can melt in the sweltering sun, and step out this summer with a lighter lip look. A tinted lip balm is a summer staple because it protects and moisturizes with a pop of color. Pick a matte finish for a fresh look. Purchase Maybelline New York Baby Lips Moisturizing Lip Balm (around $4 and available at Ulta) on your next grocery run. The pout-perfecting balm “Quenched” stands out for the summer too because it boasts SPF 20.

Bronzer

Summer magazines are famous for letting girls know how to get an astonishing “faux glow” without sun damage, and a key product towards a stunning glow is bronzer. A fabulous pick is Physicians Formula pH Matchmaker pH Powered Bronzer (around $15 and available in 2 shades at physiciansformula.com). When applied, this bronzer works with the skin’s chemistry to transform into a personalized shade.

Long-Lasting Eye Shadow

Using a standard powder eye shadow with an extra strength anti-creasing primer is a fall and winter standard, but eyelids need something a bit more refreshing in the summertime. A great eye shadow for the summer months is the Maybelline New York Color Tattoo by EyeStudio 24 Hour Eyeshadow (around $6 at Ulta in 10 vibrant shades), since it provides long-lasting color without creasing and has a smooth texture to it that makes it standout from its powder shadow competition. The Color Tattoo shadows come in on-trend brights, such as Tenacious Teal and Painted Purple, as well as enhanced neutrals, such as Bad to the Bronze and Bold Gold.

Remember, summertime is for relaxation and simplification, so don’t have hard feelings if your entire face isn’t made-up to perfection daily. Enjoy your favorite outdoor activities and quality time with friends during these next few months, with the confidence your simple, summer staples will hold up to whatever adventures come along.

How to Achieve a Makeup Look for a Pool Party

Bronze Tanning Lotion with SPF: Before hitting the pool deck, start by applying a bronze tanning lotion all over the body. This product will hydrate the skin as well as making it glow. Be sure to look for a lotion with SPF. A bad burn is never pretty and can be detrimental to the health of your skin.

Liquid Converter: Instead of spending a fortune on new waterproof makeup products, try a liquid converter that takes all powder formulas and makes them waterproof. This way you can use all of your favorite products but make them long-lasting for a day at the pool. Mix your usual products with just a few drops and directly apply it to the face. It will act as a seal so it is important to apply it quickly after mixing.

Waterproof Eyeliner and Shadow: Choose a product that is multifunctional and can be used as liner or shadow. Look for soft formulations that can line close to the lashline or blend all over the lid. If applying all over the lid, use a small shadow brush or the ring finger to warm the product up on the skin. Neutral colors close to your skin tone work best because if for any reason the product gets smudged it won’t be noticeable.

Waterproof Mascara: This product is essential when headed to a pool party, so your lashes won’t run. After curling the lashes, apply two coats of mascara to the lashes and allow to dry.

Try: Maybelline Volum' Express Colossal Cat Eyes Waterproof Mascara ($7)

Lip Treatment with SPF: It’s important to remember to protect the lips as well as the rest of the face when exposed to the sun. Use a lip treatment with an SPF of 15 or higher in it to protect, hydrate and plump.

Don’t forget to bring sunblock and a water bottle to protect your skin and stay hydrated throughout the day. To complete this look all you’ll need is a stylish swimsuit, sun hat and a rockin’ pair of sunglasses to look fab poolside.

10 Beauty Rules To Break This Summer

As college goddesses, we try so hard to keep it together! We’re intelligent, determined, independent, self-sufficient, professional and polished ... well the list goes on and it doesn’t stop there! With many obligations, we must remind ourselves that our appearance is a reflection of who we are, not a limitation.

Looking and being perfect isn’t so fun after all. Let your hair down and break these beauty rules this summer! This is the perfect time to do it.

1. Never wear false eyelashes during the day.
Ehh, whoever said that false lashes should be a luxury for the nightlife was incredibly pretentious. Sure summertime is the time when we usually wear less makeup for the fear off it literally melting off, but lashes are a great addition for that flair you missed from those cold winter days.

2. Eating chocolate will cause a zit war.
This is one of the biggest beauty myths recycled by our grandmothers, to old beauty textbooks. We know that acne prone skin produces more sebum during the warmer days, resulting in breakouts, but dark chocolate is known for its amazing antioxidant qualities! Go for it, school’s out, and you’ll burn those extra calories swimming, running, playing volleyball, biking, hiking, etc. “Clinical studies have failed to show that any food can actually cause acne (though in some rare instances, various foods might exacerbate existing acne)” says Woman’s Day. “‘Any correlation between chocolate and breakouts is limited,’ Dr. Hirsch says. Eating a well-balanced diet, which includes the occasional chocolate treat, is the way to look and feel your best.”

3. Matching mani and pedi.
Now this is one of the most boring rules we have EVER come across! If you can’t decide between two colors, apply both! There is no fuss here, have fun. Summertime is the perfect time to break this rule, all the bright colors really bring out your tan.

4. Ponytails are a lazy girl’s hairstyle.
SO FALSE! Ladies with long hair, many of us feel your pain, when the temperature hits the 90s, it’s difficult to keep cool with our long locks weighing us down. Sleek up your mane with a ponytail, thus giving you a super chic look even on hot summer, bad hair days.

5. Wash your hair everyday.
Should we say this again? Second day hair is a far more manageable and holds styles easier than squeaky, clean strands. Since frizzy hair is a result of dryness, you may find that second day hair doesn’t frizz as much as clean strands because the natural oils from your scalp are providing enough lubrication to prevent this from hair phenomenon.

6. Always wear black mascara.
We always hear it, opt for the blackest black mascara you can find. It may make our eyes pop, but during those beach beauty days, we want to rock the most au naturale look we can, that means beach waves, bronzed cheeks, and natural eyes. Opt for a brown mascara instead, which will give definition to your eyes, and won’t look too harsh in the heat.

7. Can’t wear bronzer if you’re already tan.
OMG, this is just one of those liferuiner rules we have ever heard! “Like, oh my god mom, why are you ruining my life life?” That’s exactly how we feel! Let’s get this straight, bronzer is every girl’s go to product during the summer. Even a tan can make your skin look dull, and a little bit of bronzer goes a long way.

8. Dark roots look tacky.
If you have been a living, breathing human being for the last two years, you know ombre is here to stay. Take these summer months for a little bit of hair rehab, don’t rush to the salon for a touch up!

9. Frizzy hair looks messy.
Not really! The trick here is your styling method! Work with mother nature’s summer heat, rather than against it. A low chignon with a few wispy strands, which frame your gorgeous face, is incredibly adorable and summer appropriate.

10. Apply foundation all over the face.
If you are a foundation lover, and a tinted moisturizers and BB creams just don’t cut it out for you, keep your foundation routine in tact this summer. The trick here is to apply it in the center of your face, which is usually the area which needs the most coverage, and blend seamlessly to the out edges.

There you go, girlies! You don’t have to break every beauty rule on this list, but trying one doesn’t hurt.

How to Rock Second Day Hair

We know some of you ladies have a habit of washing your hair everyday for squeaky clean strands, as opposed to sporting a little texture on that inevitable second day, post blowout. We are not here to judge you but merely to enlighten you and tell you exactly why second day hair is equally stunning or even better than freshly-washed tresses!

Trust us, we are not going rogue on you guys. For you ladies with finer to medium strands, your main style hair concern is a flat do and greasy hair that sticks to your gorgeous face! Eh, we hate it too!

Maintenance is Key

The first commandment you must follow is to STOP WASHING YOUR HAIR EVERYDAY! By washing your hair daily, you are drying out your scalp out, thus sending signals to produce more oil. Start off slow, wash your hair every other day, then decrease it to your desired amount. Find what works for your scheduled and lovely locks. We recommend that you wash your hair every 2 to 3 days.

To maintain beautiful second day hair, reach for a clarifying shampoo monthly. Now this will be a trial and error process. You must find one which doesn’t dry out your ends or your scalp. Sucks to hear, but once you find your match, your styling routine will drastically improve. For you girlies with color treated hair, here’s where it gets a little tricky: you can’t just use any clarifying shampoo because the wrong pick may fade your color or make your blonde locks brassy and yellow. Opt for a clarifying shampoo tailored for colored treated.

One of our favorite hair care quotes comes from Emmy award winning stylist Curt Darling who parallels washing your hair to washing your favorite item in your wardrobe: “If you washed your favorite shirt everyday, its color would fade and its texture would become threadbare. The fabric of your hair is the same in that it gets worked out and dry from over cleansing,” he says. “The tone of your hair can also fade, causing your strands to look dull and drab,” says Pout Pretty.

Rock Your Waves

If you know the following days you will be in a time crunch due to deadlines and exams, our first tip is to rock wavy or curly strands. Embrace your natural curls! Since wavy hair doesn’t stick to the scalp, grease seeps in slower. During this time a teasing comb is your secret weapon. If you have straight hair, your curling iron will do the trick!

Aim for bedhead curls, Blake Lively style, nothing too perfect. Heck, do a half up do, perfect for second day hair!

Extend Your Blowout

The first thing you must know about straight hair is its ability to become greasier faster than curly hair. When you straighten your hair there is constant contact with the natural oils on your fingertips. Avoid touching your hair at all costs, this includes brushing! A tip when blow drying your hair is to blow dry in the opposite direction of your forehead; this is both good for you skin and hair. It prevents a future pimple from developing and doesn’t add extra grease onto your mane.

“Don’t forget to set your mane with a blast of cool air,” says Beautylish. “‘It’s like a Jello mold. If you let Jello cool before you unmold it, it holds its shape better,’ explains James. ‘Same goes for hair—if you want the volume in your blowout to last, finish by blowing cool air on the hair that’s wrapped around your round brush. Otherwise the hair will fall flat as it cools naturally.’ Mist tresses with a flexible finishing hairspray to set your style. The key to a sleek blowout is zapping any dampness. ‘Make sure your hair is completely dry. If any bit of moisture is left in the shaft it will get frizzy or limp faster,’ warns Paul.”

Our favorite way to extend our blowout is with dry shampoo. Some ladies hate dry shampoo, while others love it. If you are one of the few college goddesses who loathe dry shampoo, we are sorry to inform you that you just haven’t found the right fit; keep searching! Our ultimate favorite is Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray 2.2 fl. oz. ($19, oribe.com). This baby gives you that extra texture for volume without weighing your hair down. We even use this on days when our strands are gyyyyysqueaky clean, this just holds the style better and makes us feel glamorous.

Also, invest in Velcro rollers, these will be your secret weapon for Victoria Secret-inspired voluminous hair. If you’re on a budget, whip out the baby powder -- yes, it works! The secret here is to apply it to your roots at and massage it at night before bed. If you plan to add some baby powder on your hair right before class, you may just leave your dorm with chalky, gray hair!

Post Blowout Ideas

Go Blair Waldorf on us and sport the perfect headband. Any headband will do because it will distract from any greasiness peaking through, or find one thick enough to cover a portion of your hair. You could always add some volume with a teasing comb or dry shampoo! Don’t be afraid to accessorize, be bold and try a turban or a hat, while maintaining your flowing locks.

If you have incredibly greasy hair, and want to avoid washing your hair daily, as you should, braids rule! Aside from being spring's biggest runway trend, braids are cute, fun and easy to master. Second day hair is perfect for braids. It’s almost impossible to create a perfect braid on clean hair. Your second day hair will hold any style much better than a fresh blowout. Our personal favorite is the side braid, both trendy and gorgeous! For extra greasy strands, we love Redken Powder Refresh 01 ($17.45, amazon.com).

Your ponytail just became your best friend. To avoid the appearance of extreme greasiness, do not tie your hair super tight. A messy ponytail is the perfect way to go, especially after rocking your waves after a couple of days. This is the perfect time to pull out your teasing comb! If you dare, opt for the ponytail bump!

Also, instead of the ordinary ponytail, experiment with a sexy but messy low chignon. Grab some bobby pins and start pinning! Don’t forget to bring out your bangs for added style.

Since we are already talking about the ponytail, let’s talk about the top knot. Your bun will be easier to secure, also less hairspray will be needed during your second day! This classic hairstyle will disguise any grease, plus anytime to use less product on your beehive is a win for us.

Sure some of you may think we are exaggerating, but many ladies out there have troublesome second day locks. Let’s get real ladies, second day hair is time saving, equally gorgeous, extra bouncy, and easier to hold. Although your hair is still kinda “clean” on this day, all styles could be worn on the third or fourth day, if you’re a hair hustler, like we are, and we’re proud too! Hair hustlers unite!

How to Transition Your Winter Skincare into Summer

Now that finals are over, spring break is long gone, and the cold mornings will no longer ruin your day, it’s time for a change -- a beauty change -- the best kind.

Although summer is our favorite season, we’re heartbroken to admit that it is our least favorite season in terms of beauty consciousness. Now don’t call us vain, but a girl’s gotta look good! Sure, during summertime we can get away with wearing less makeup because the sun has given us a natural glow; but the dirt build up from those hot, sweaty nights at the beach will make our skin more susceptible to blackheads and breakouts.

As much as we love the new product launches and the summer-themed collections from our favorite brands, adjusting is always irksome. The foundation to any beauty transition lies in the magic of your skincare routine. As your bronzer and SPF become your best friend, let your skincare do all the talking with a few additions.

Take note that during the winter season you adapted by using gentler products like a gentle cleanser, and mask treatments to treat any dry patches and dullness. Now it’s time to put those babies in a cool, dark place to prolong shelf life. By adding a few extra goodies like a toner, a lighter moisturizer and deep pore cleansing mask you will prevent extra sebum production.

Dry Skin: For dry skin we love Aveeno Smart Essentials Daily Moisturizer ($14.99, Target). The trick for dry skin is to maintain enough moisture.

Combination: Some of you girlies with combination skin tend to sway either to a dryer or oilier side. One thing’s for certain, if you’re not using toner now, start looking for one! A toner can be your panacea for your skin imbalances. Also, don’t forget to switch from a heavy moisturizer to a lightweight one; we like Philosophy’s Take A Deep Breath ($34, philosophy.com). To attempt to normalize your skin, never ever forget to use a deep cleansing mask. Any from the Freeman collection ($3.99 each) or cute, travel ones from the Montagne Jeunesse ($1.99 each) collection will do! You can find these babies in any drugstore!

Oily: For an oily complexion we recommend DDF Ultra Lite Oil Free Moisturizing Dew ($35.70, ddfskincare.com). This baby is lightweight and moisturizing enough for those summer days! If you have oily skin, you must not SKIP your toner whatsoever! We love Clinique Clarifying Lotion 4 ($22.50, Clinique).

Acne: We love the Clean and Clear Dual Action Moisturizer ($5.99, Walgreen’s). If you’re interested in a new cleanser, we recommend Neutrogena Oil Free Acne Wash Cleanser ($6.49, Target). “This winner has an unblemished record of clearing acne without stripping skin. The clean-rinsing gel, with 2 percent salicylic acid, exfoliates, lifts sebum out of pores, and smells good,” tells dermatologist Ruth Tedaldi to InStyle.

A skincare secret we learned is to apply drying ingredients before bed, such as salicylic acid, retinol, benzoyl peroxide and your moisturizing ingredients during the day. This way in your sleep your skin will work its magic to restore and balance your complexion with a push from your favorite products.

Toss out your heavy foundation, and opt for a tinted moisturizer. Never EVER forget your SPF. A rule of thumb to follow is what you do to your face do to your neck! SPF is applied after your serum, moisturizer, and before your makeup.

As for our bodies, the best thing we could do is SPF all the way! Never forget to apply sunblock on your hands, neck, nape and feet, as these parts age the fastest in our body.

The seasons change, so does your wardrobe; don’t let your skincare routine fall behind ... after all it is our biggest organ!

Your Signature Beauty Look: The Elizabeth

Whether you’ve heard of Elizabeth Taylor from your grandmother, mother, father, her multiple marriages, or extensive charitable work, there’s one thing you can’t forget: she’s the first person to grace Hollywood screens with her unforgettable violet eyes. She’s actually one of the few vintage icons of any generation whose beauty can be scientifically proven.

“Elizabeth owes her status as a beauty icon to the fact that she was different,” says Oolala Vintage. “Despite the attempts of studios to ‘tame’ her thick eyebrows and blonde her hair, Elizabeth maintained what was natural and different about her face. She didn’t remove her mole or hide it under makeup. And instead of straightening her hair or forcing it into ornate hairstyles, she let it curl naturally.”

Since Elizabeth naturally had thick eyelashes and beautiful violet eyes, she never shyed away from accentuating her strongest feature, her eyes. Her beauty looks revolved around her violet gems; think of Cleopatra, one of her biggest beauty inspirations after starring in such an iconic role. No doubt about it, it was all about the kohl liner.

The key to any Liz look is sultry eyes, no matter how they are achieved, whether it be with dramatic liner or the quintessential smokey eye. If you are the type of girl who loves playing up her flirtiest feature, then you’re definitely an Elizabeth. You are in fact a beauty rebel, and other girls only become a Liz for special night outs, not everyday. Take notes!

Step 1: Prep Your Skin

Elizabeth’s skin always appeared extremely soft and velvety. We recommend you chose a primer that will fill in any pores, like Benefit Cosmetics The Porefessional ($30, Sephora). To achieve Elizabeth’s velvet skin, we love using Laura Mercier Silk Creme Foundation ($43, Sephora). If you are a fan of cream foundations, they always works for this look; don’t be afraid to experiment.

Although the signature Hollywood face in the 1950s was a flat, matte look, we steer away from any dullness for a modern spin.

Step 2: Cover Any Imperfections

If you are battling with a few breakouts right now it’s best to use a medium to full coverage foundation, so caking on concealer won’t be a problem.

Step 3: Exaggerate Your Natural Brow

Since you plan to create a strong eye, your brows must be equally striking. Fill in any sparse hair and follow the natural shape of your brow. “The key is to exaggerate your natural brow for a powerful, sensual shape,” says Suite 101. Shoot for drama; don’t be afraid to go a little darker than your own natural brow color, unless you already have gorgeous thick Elizabeth Taylor brows! Since brows are a focal feature in an Elizabeth look we recommend Too Faced Brow Envy Shaping & Defining Kit ($35, toofaced.com) for its foolproof application!

Step 4: Prep the Eyes!

Since Elizabeth’s best feature was her eyes, they must be played up to perfection. Don’t forget to prime if you are going for a smokey eye! Before you begin, take note of Elizabeth’s naturally dark lashes, which gave her signature sultry look. Choose the blackest black you can find to outline the upper rim of your eye; this step must not be overlooked! By tightlining you will create the illusion of thicker lashes.

Step 5: Sexy Eyes

Now this step is totally up to you. You can create your favorite daytime smokey eye look or go a little Cleopatra, which is our favorite Elizabeth Taylor look of all time! Begin by sweeping a bone colored shadow over your lids, like MAC’s Brule ($15, maccosmetics.com) -- anything to cover up any discoloration and give your eye a more polished look. For a little definition use a taupe gray color on your socket. Just remember not to overdo it because you don’t want to detract from the best part of the look: the sexy eyeliner!

To begin, we must remind you that a kohl liner will not do the trick here! Reach for your favorite liquid liner or gel liner. Our favorite liner for the perfect cat eye is Stila’s Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner ($20, stilacosmetics.com). The key here is to create a dramaticized cat eye! Finally add a flesh colored liner on your lower, like Sephora Collection Kohl Liner in Lilac ($3, Sephora). Remember, if you did choose to do a smokey eye, don’t shy away from the drama of liquid liner either. The more dramatic, the more Liz Taylor it is!

Sure, this is more of a tame Cleopatra look, but any signature daytime look should be enough to tease your admirers!

Step 6: Use Mascara Wisely

Now this is something we stress: make sure the mascara you use is in the blackest black and don’t skip curling them! We love Benefit Cosmetics They’re Real! Mascara ($23, benefitcosmetics.com).

Step 7: Add a Touch of Color

Use the lightest hand and sweep your favorite blush, one which compliments your skin tone, on the apple of your cheeks! Add enough just to liven up your face.

Step 8: Nude Lips Are the Way to Go

We figured since all our Marilyn’s love red, and our Audrey’s and Grace’s only sport natural colors, our Elizabeth’s should sport the best nude lips. To further bring attention to your most attractive feature -- your eyes -- use a nude color. We like Clinique Chubby Stick Moisturizing Lip Colour Balm in Heaping Hazelnut ($16, Sephora).

Overall, think of Elizabeth’s makeup look in terms of contrast: it truly is a work of art. Taylor’s cascading raven hair added to the glow of her porcelain skin, combined with her striking eyes, which were further exaggerated with makeup. You may notice she used very little blush and bronzer, which intensified her porcelain skin, and the focus was always strong eyes, which were further magnified with liner and shadow. All these variables enhanced Taylor’s hyper-feminine features. This is why she usually sported a red lip and a nude lip later on in life to exaggerate the contrast in her already beautiful visage.

She was the last of Hollywood’s Golden Age to go, but her beauty is the most unforgettable of any actress. The best advice we can give you is to steal beauty tips from the most beautiful woman in her peak. Nude lips and a strong eye can make any girl feel sexy in an ordinary day. Don’t be afraid to accentuate your best features, including your curves! At least that’s what Elizabeth Taylor would have told us.

Beauty Essentials for Repairing Skin and Covering up a Sunburn

During the warm summer months it’s almost inevitable that any girl-on-the-go will get sunburnt. Redness on the face and body can not only be painful, but hard to cover up. The best way to treat skin after a sunburn is to keep it moisturized and refrain from layering on makeup. But sometimes a little help is needed to conceal burns for events like weddings or even just to go to school. Here are a few tips and products that will help repair damaged skin as well as conceal it for a fresh and healthy look.

Ice Ice Baby: After a sunburn, blood vessels come closer to the surface of the skin to help repair the damage. Gently rubbing an ice cube on sunburned areas can help reduce swelling and redness. Be sure to slightly warm the ice cube up in your hand before directly applying it to the skin. If the skin is too sensitive for direct contact, wrap a tissue or paper towel around it to help buffer the cold.

*Tip: If your entire body is sunburnt, use a body lotion with aloe in it to help alleviate the pain. Try Hawaiian Tropic’s Silk Hydration After Sun Lotion ($8) for 24 hours of moisturization and soothing aloe. Another great numbing agent is lidocaine, which can be found in creams and lathered on the body after a burn.

Cleanse: For the first week or so after sun damage, try not to cleanse the skin with products that have peroxide or salicylic acid, to avoid irritation. Try Neutrogena’s Extra Gentle Cleanser ($7), which will add moisture back into the skin, rather than stripping it.

Moisturize: After cleansing, choose a moisturizer with aloe in it for a calming effect that reduces redness. Try Kiss My Face’s Olive & Aloe Moisturizer for Sensitive Skin ($12), which will soothe and care for the skin.

Green Primer: For a burn on the face, use a green primer as a base. The green will help neutralize the redness from the sunburn and allow for more even coverage when foundation is applied. Try Smashbox's Photo Finish Color Correcting Foundation Primer ($15) to help fill in lines and even out discoloration.

Foundation: Either powder or liquid foundation can work over a sunburn, but be sure to gently apply it with a foundation brush to reduce further irritation. Bare Minerals Powder Foundation SPF 15 ($27) is made without synthetic chemicals and will easily cover a sunburn. It also has an SPF in it, which will help prevent further burning or irritation.

Blush: Apply blush sparingly when covering a sunburn. If your natural flush is still coming through, you can skip blush altogether. For just a hint of color on the cheeks, choose a light pink that won’t make you look like you got sunburnt all over again. Try Boots No7 Mineral Blusher ($10) for just a hint of pink to the cheeks.

Lip Balm: Usually when a sunburn occurs on the face, that means that the lips are burnt as well. Finish off the look with a soothing lip balm with SPF in it. Try Jack Black's Intense Therapy Lip Balm SPF 25 ($8) for protection. The minty balm will help moisturize and protect.

This summer, be sure to wear an SPF every single day, even if it’s just in a daily moisturizer. Also, drink water to keep your body and skin healthy and hydrated! Taking care of your skin should definitely be a priority, and preventing sunburns is one of the best ways to be proactive about it. Be sure to keep an easy mini spray of sunblock (like this one!) in your purse and car so you can be prepared at all times.

The Dirty Truth: Fixes for Smelly Body Parts

OK, ladies, let’s get to it; we have never shyed away from talking about everything from makeup mistakes to waxing ALL our body parts. Yep, we are those girlfriends you need in your life, and this is exactly why we will tell you how to fix those smelly body parts.

Let’s begin by telling you that, yes, women do perspire and it is not a myth, but we also fart; never be ashamed of that. Men believe that being a girl is glamorous and we always smell “nice.” But the truth is, we are human and need advice on those extra hot days, when our pits get a little too friendly with our shirts and dresses.

What to do about smelly...

Arm Pits:
If you know you’re following an excellent hygiene routine, and your pits get smelly even though you use deodorant regularly, “you may be an excessive sweater and need a prescription antiperspirant from your doctor,” says Dana Simpler, MD, a physician at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore. In extreme-sweat situations, Botox treatments under the arms can help: “It puts a stop to excessive sweating and the resulting body odor,” says EverydayHealth.

Down There:
If you know your vagina’s bad odor is coming from extra perspiration, the best thing to do is to keep the area dry. Avoid wearing extremely tight clothing, and opt for a skirt or dress. Another factor which plays a key role is your shower routine. Make sure you are washing your nether regions daily with a mild non-drying soap, “(but skip the soap on the thin tissues of the inner vulva or vaginal opening),” says EverydayHealth. If you are sure that your stench has nothing to do with excessive sweat, a harmful bacteria may be present. Be aware of other symptoms, such as itchiness, discharge, pain or burning. P.S. The best undies to use are cotton fabrics!

Bad Breath:
We’ve all been there, hello, stinky breath in the morning! You may wonder why you woke up with stinky breath one morning and not the next -- this is attributed to your diet, simple as that. Daily flossing and brushing will fix this right away! If brushing and flossing your teeth isn’t doing the job, it’s time to visit your dentist, so they can properly clean your teeth and get rid of any bits of foods hiding in your precious pearly whites. Say goodbye to Mr. Halitosis!

Gassy Tummy: Ladies, ladies, ladies, we hope you’re paying attention to your bowel movements! Of course we are not asking that you record what time you went number two on a given day, but build-up can definitely lead to a gassy few days. We all have a trigger -- maybe its beans, dairy, or leafy greens -- but it’s best to take note of the foods we are sensitive to. Two words for this problem: Pepto Bismol! Aside from taking Pepto Bismol, pay attention to the foods you’re consuming. Fiber is the keyword here! Fiber-filled foods are lettuce, raspberries, strawberries, oatmeal, almonds, beans, and the list goes on! If you find that your gassiness is a constant problem, it’s time to make an appointment with your doctor ASAP! This is not a joke, your bowel movements play a key role in your health!

Smelly Hair Syndrome: Smelly hair syndrome? Huh? Is that even a real thing? Yes it is, “according to cosmetic chemist Perry Romanowski, ‘smelly hair syndrome’ is a condition that results in a pungent stench from the hair and scalp,” says EverydayHealth. “What does smelly hair smell like? Romanowski said people with the condition have ‘compared the smell to sour milk, wet dog, moldy hay, potatoes, an old shoe or dirty socks, a jacket that’s never been to the dry cleaner, and an oily smell mixed with vomit.’’ The cause of smelly hairy syndrome is still unknown, but, “Romanowski recommends treating it with Dial antibacterial liquid body wash and soaps that contain sulfur.”

Funky Feet: Funky feet is a result of bacteria buildup cause from extra perspiration, or simply not drying your feet well after your shower. The best advice we can give is to keep your feet moisture-free at all cost; avoid wearing any heavy shoes or socks during the summer months. Head to the drugstore and find an antiperspirant to combat any wetness. This is the perfect time to whip out your sandals, flip flops and favorite heels with our favorite summer sundresses.

Attitude: Don’t call us corny, because we are so not! But if you find that your friends are not responding to your text messages, snapshots, commenting on your instagram photos, or even giving you the cold shoulder on your way to class, it’s time to clean up your act. Be a lady, give them a call and apologize for your smelly attitude. We all get a little moody, but it’s no reason to be a grump!

The truth is we don’t want anybody, including ourselves, to get a whiff from our malodorous body parts, but it happens to the best of us! If your stench is a continuous problem, and not a one-time kind of thing, it is best you visit your doctor; this could be a signal for an underlying problem. Listen to your body; it will always tell you when it is time for a change.

How to Achieve Pore-fection

“My hairline is so weird.” “My nail beds suck.” “My pores are so huge.” Sound familiar? Yes, we are, in fact, quoting "Mean Girls!" Out of all these pesky imperfections, the one that brings down our self-esteem the most is our pores. Obviously, as the pores we are most concerned with are on our faces, the most visible part to the world!

“Everybody’s got ’em -- they’re the openings to our oil glands. But whether or not you pay attention to your pores probably depends on their size,” says Daily Glow.

Before we proceed with our lesson, girlies, we hate to break it to you -- but pore size is determined by genetics, diet, sex and overall health; you cannot minimize your pore size, but you can make them appear smaller. When you speak about pores, in reality you are talking about hair follicles, whether you can see you pores or not, we have them all over our bodies.

Aside from being an unsightly nuisance, these babies do have a job! “They allow the oil generated in the sebaceous glands to reach the surface and lubricate the skin. The skin’s natural oil, called sebum, helps keep skin supple and healthy,” says About.com.

Pores become a problem when they become clogged by oil and dirt. You may have realized that if you have larger pores than your friends, you most likely suffer more from acne, blackheads, whiteheads and overall excessive oiliness.

But the good news is, you can always make your pores appear smaller. Your skincare regimen may take more maintenance than your best friend’s, but you will find that if you deal with your pores, your skin will begin to look and feel more flawless.

How To Care For Your Pores

Stay away from the sun! As you age your pores will gradually become larger because you skin’s elasticity decreases. Don’t speed up the process by forgetting to wear sunscreen and getting a tan on those hot, summer days! You want to maintain as much collagen as you naturally can to prevent pores from enlarging.

The most basic advice we can give you is don’t let your pores get clogged! This means using the right products for your skin. It is important to cleanse your face twice a day, tone and moisturize. No matter how oily your skin is, moisturize!

During summer months, it is important to use a more aggressive face cleanser to prevent dirt buildup. Look for goodies that contain salicylic, lactic, or glycolic acids, which aid in removing excessive oil.

And you must exfoliate, little darlings! Exfoliating will save all skin types from a slew of troubles. In addition to using the appropriate, daily products for your skin, a face mask is essential! Using a clay mask once a week is ideal to draw out any impurities from the skin. And please, please, please, remove your makeup! One night of going to sleep with your makeup on will leave you with a friendly, pimply reminder for the next two weeks, never doubt that!

Finally, “...put your makeup to work. Products such as primers, concealers, foundation, loose mineral powder, and blotting sheets can help you maintain coverage and make large pores less visible. Just be sure to thoroughly cleanse your face at day's end to keep pores from getting clogged with makeup residue,” says Daily Glow.

Sleep Time

Even though we think you guys are too old for this talk, we are going reiterate it: keep your hands and hair OFF your face! Do not squeeze any blackheads, whiteheads or pimples. Squeezing your blemishes will only cause your pores to become larger than they were. For you ladies with oily skin and bangs, we hate to break it to you, but we pretty sure that your bangs are kicking your skin’s oiliness into overdrive by making breakouts more common on your forehead and temples! This may seem like common sense, but don’t fall asleep with your hair loose; you hair is full of oils and products. It also helps to change your pillowcase daily, this way you won’t have to sleep in the last night's bacteria.

Most of you think keeping your face clean is enough, but it is not. Whatever touches your face should be clean! This includes your hands, makeup brushes and cell phone.

It may sound harsh, but taking care of your skin is common sense. Taking these small measures will make you feel better because you will know that you are consciously doing everything to stop further aggravating it. All your skin’s problems lie in your pores! Keep them clean! It’s hard to keep your pores dirt-free but not impossible.
